* The Godfather II
* The Empire Strikes Back
* Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
* Batman Returns
* From Russia With Love
* A Shot in the Dark (sequel to the first Pink Panther)
* The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (third film in the series, following "For a Few Dollars More" -- if that counts, then it's clearly superior)
* Addams Family Values
I didn't include a couple films that are possibly as good as the original, perhaps just as enjoyable but in a different way (i.e. Aliens)
I had a bad feeling about Indy 4 ever since it was announced, although many others were excited and ready to bolt out the door to see it. The Indiana Jones films are products of the 1980s ('81, '84, '89), minicking 1930s more serials. You can't have the magic back if Indy's not a tough, energetic middle aged adventurer fighting against NAZI's in the World War II era. You can bring the characthers back, but it's not a real Indy movie. This new film having Indy in the late 1950s fighting UFOs is as "geninue" part of the series as the Young Indiana Jones Chorincles or the video game "Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine", featuring the voice of Harrison Ford and set in 1947. In other words, it's really a spinoff about Indy's "other adventures" than a main part of the series. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was meant to be the final film the series, with Indy riding off into the sunset, and you can't make a sequel to that (as compared to Rocky V, which went nowhere and was begging for a proper ending). I had the same problem with Alien 4 -- one sequel too many. The story ended with Alien 3, any later films is just bad aftertaste.
Gomez Addams was Raul Julia’s signature role.
