After 43 years as the lead voice on Georgia's radio network, play-by-play announcer Larry Munson announced Monday that he has retired, effective immediately.
The 85-year-old Munson called No. 3 Georgia's first two home games this season but said he will not be in the booth Saturday when the Bulldogs take on No. 8 Alabama.
"I can't express enough my deep feelings toward the Georgia football fans," Munson said in a statement released by Georgia. "They have been so friendly especially during this most recent period of time. I feel I owe them so much more than I can give. I'll remember all the great times with the Dogs and have the fondest wishes and good luck toward them all."

Thank God.
I heard one broadcast this season on XM. It had been a few years since I had heard him. He sounded like he was having significant health problems, and I’m not really surprised by the announcement.
Today is a sad for us here in Bulldog Nation. Larry Munson has been the voice of the Dawgs for many of us fans for our entire lives.
I wish him well, and hope he conquers the health problems he faces and lives a long happy retirement.
Or to put it in his style of words :
The opponent is grinding grinding grinding, Larry’s back is against the wall, and only his will is keeping the opponent out of the endzone. Hunker Down you Hairy Dawg, Hunker Down!!!!
And as for you MrChips - you can kiss my hairy arse.
I’d heard from a lot of people not just UGA fans but around the SEC that, maybe he got on a few nerves, but he was on some level respected—sort of a Chick Hearn of the SEC.
Do you know who Munson’s replacement will be?
Some trivia for you. From 1983-85 Munson also did play by play for the USFL Jacksonville Bulls.
It is sad to see him go.
Godspeed to Larry.
Scott Howard, Munson’s long time color commentator, has been doing all the road games for the last 2 seasons, and will now take over fulltime.
Former Bulldog and NFL QB Eric Zeier is now the fulltime Color Commentator.
He’s getting up there. He stopped doing roads games a while back.
So, I didn’t like Munson. His hackneyed “We” was the most grating sound in sports. You know, I love my state (Georgia), but some years ago I drove my mother northward to Atlanta the day after the Florida game . . . or “cocktail party” I think it’s called . . . and I was embarrassed for her (and for myself) by the hundreds of cars passing us with four-letter words painted all over them by Georgia fans. And that last comment of yours just now is more of the same, and is precisely why I’m not a Bulldog fan. It is all too typical. Good day, Sir.
English departments tend to be packed with left wingers and those who are into ‘alternative’ lifestyles. Your comment makes one think that you fit right in.
More slime and ignorance. I rest my case.
Even back then he had his own unique style.
Didn't he help with Atlanta Braves broadcasts when they first moved there from Milwaukee?
i know he’s a terrible, nerve-wracking announcer, but i still love larry.
he and leonard posttoasties enhanced many a pregame tailgate for
me back in athens in the “70’s and *80’s.
You really ought to try DU or Kos. You’d fit right in.
To each his own. And he meant something to you which you should always cherish. I have friends at UGA, students, former students, and one professor. None of them paint their cars with four letter words. I do recognize that it’s a big place. But what’s with that Yankee fight song?
More of the same. It just confirms my opinion.
Anyone who would gloat over the declining health of someone in their mid-80s who has never done anything to harm them or a loved one is clearly depraved. The only thing to argue about is the depths of the depravity.
Now, if you recite some personal slight from Munson to you, I’ll consider withdrawing my comment. Otherwise, you are condemned by your own comment.
He will be missed.
