What's up with Free Republic? It's awfully slow and when I can get it to open...usually after two or three times...it opens in Safe Mode. Is it just me or is the Sara Palin news swamping our server?

this happens every election year.
every freeper, DUer, lurker, pajamahadeen, drive-by media types, hockey-mom, sam's club republican checks out free republic. the traffic is much higher around this time.
it will be like this for the next week or so. then the traffic will slow down. then it will pick up again in october thru election day.

I'd imagine the database server is running motlen white-hot on a day like today, and also last night as well.
I can only imagine how it will be next week during the RNC...

It's been slow for me for a couple of days, and today I keep getting a "web site can't be found" screen.
To: pgkdan
I’m having all kinds of problems too.

Maybe Sarah Palin has broken the conservative websites, Drudgereport is flubbering right now as well. Palin instantly became the top search at all search engines.
Then again FR has been kind of choppy since Sunday night for me, most times it is good but like today it is crappy.

this happens every election yearNot like this. I've had trouble getting on all week but today is awful. I've been here since 1998 and this is about the slowest I've seen it.

I sure am glad someone posted this .. I’m rural, with dinosaur phone lines, on dial-up and it’s raining ... I always have trouble in these conditions ... but it DID seem more unusually slow today.

Yes. I’m afraid I’m going to have to find another web site to waste time at work on.

My internet was out for 2 days, so I thought the sluggishness was ISP problems before the outage.
Internet is fixed. FR isn’t.
FR has been running sluggish for a week or more [actually, since the last ‘font upgrades’.]
It is too sluggest to even following Breaking News threads or Live threads.
[Just to ‘preview’ this post took 18 seconds to load. Ridiculous!]

Then donate to FreeRepublic to help keep it going... or just complain.

Uh. Didn't the last telethon end just a couple of weeks ago?
If money for upgrading equipment/connections is the problem, JR needs to say so. I'm sure donations would be made for that.
It seems, however, the problem may be something else. FR has been sluggish and sporadic since that last 'upgrade'.

***I concur. It’s an architectural issue and the high volume from today is going to pinpoint the bottleneck. Adding more servers is nice, but when there’s a lot of back & forth between the servers it knocks out any added efficiencies. In my view, this is what FR is up against.

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of slowdown? What I'm experiencing is that a huge ball of dryer lint just burst in through my window. It's mostly grey but there are some other colors in it. It takes up most of my room.
I really hate it when that happens.

I'm getting some slowness on other sites as well, like E-bay.
Could be a atack coming from Putin's goons, or some other friend of Obamma.
