Just saw a live report on FNC. The reporter was on a balcony and he asked the camera to scan over to the majestic Birds Nest Stadium. The smog was so thick you could hardly make it out! What a disaster!

Hullo -
I haven’t watched proceedings yet, dear friends, so I don’t have the foggiest notion what all of you are talking about in such merry terms.
Do keep me informed though, please.

I’m watching CBC Live on TV. That air is FILTHY! How on earth are the athletes supposed to BREATH?

I wonder if the Chinese have been training their athletes in smoke-filled boxes, just to get them used to the air in Beijing?

I turned on the television and it was on MSNBC so my first taste of TeeVee this morning was Mika’s shrilling - enough to make me choke on the coffee I needed to wake up!

Joe was commiserating they would be ‘off the air’ and the producer was reading all the love notes being sent in about separation anxiety losing Joe and Mika for two weeks...wah!
Sounds like the only breath of ‘fresh air’ the Olympics could offer us.

I am surprised Mika didn’t assume she would be doing voice overs for the broadcasts from Beijing.

I don’t know if Joe has an immense capacity for withholding cutting remarks, or slaps to the face - I know I could not sit next to that raving woman and keep a straight face as does he. It must be broadcasting hell!

Watching live ore-coverage on Taiwan TV. The air pollution is absolutely horrible. Looks like southern California fire smoke in the air. Visibility from hotel balcony is about 300 yards.

Action starts in about 30 minutes.

It makes me wonder....what if “something” happens...will the Chinese attempt to “shut off” news coming out of Beijing? Would that even be possible? Could they shut off ALL outbound channels for EVERYONE?

I mean...these Olympics are the first ones since 1980 that are being held in a police state. The last time before that? Berlin 1936.

According to the CBC announcers security is obvious and probably the most sophisticated ever seen so far probably due to the advancement of technology and time over past games. Let’s see what happens if anything.

Here’s a little bit of fun trivia for you:

The mascots for the Olympics are 5 child-like representations of things like fire, fish, pandas, and antelope.

In China, a term of endearment for a child is to “double” their name. For instance, the names of the mascots, in order, are “Bei-Bei”, “Jing-Jing”, “Huan-Huan”, “Ning-Ning”, and “Yi-Yi”.
When you say their names singly, they come out as “Beijing huan ying ni”...”Welcome to Beiljng”.

BTW...according to the Beijing Olympic Commitee, the ‘official’ countdown begins at 7:56pm Beijing time. Supposedly, they have something ‘special’ planned.

We’ll see.
