A suspect in a car break-in was socked in the face and held for police after the cars owner and a neighbor interrupted his work.
Walter Elliott, 41, is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $25,000 bond.
According to a police affidavit, a neighbor called Rubin Whittaker of the 1300 block of Hemlock at 5 a.m. Tuesday and told him somebody was rummaging through his van.
Whittaker and another neighbor, Anthony Williams, went to the van and told the man to get out.
The suspect began to run, but the escape attempt was aborted when he was struck in the face, knocking him cold.
When officers arrived, they found Elliott in the yard and under guard.
Elliott, who has a history of arrests dating to 1985, is scheduled for a video arraignment Thursday.
