Last Ice Age happened in less than year say scientists

THE last ice age 13,000 years ago took hold in just one year, more than ten times quicker than previously believed, scientists have warned. Rather than a gradual cooling over a decade, the ice age plunged Europe into the deep freeze, German Research Centre for Geosciences at Potsdam said.

Cold, stormy conditions caused by an abrupt shift in atmospheric circulation froze the continent almost instantly during the Younger Dryas less than 13,000 years ago – a very recent period on a geological scale.

The new findings will add to fears of a serious risk of this happening again in the UK and western Europe – and soon.

Dr Achim Brauer, of the GFZ (GeoForschungs Zentrum) German Research Centre for Geosciences at Potsdam, and colleagues analysed annual layers of sediments, called "varves", from a German crater lake.

Each varve records a single year, allowing annual climate records from the region to be reconstructed.

All of Canada goes up for sale, Cheap.

The risk of falling through ice lakes on the highway to the diamond mines goes down . . .

THIS is far more worthy of concern that globull warming. Quick, someone tell Albore that the earth is overdue for a sudden swift flip into a new ice age, and globull “warming” doesn’t have a damned thing to do with it.

If this happened again...GM would make a killing on SUVs world wide...Coal plants would spring eternal...and the left would still scream....”Bushes Fault!”.

A minor problem. As we all know, all we’ll have to do is drive our SUVs a little more and the atmosphere will warm right up. /sarcasm

Nah. Not unless Hapgood was right about crustal shift , and zeks were able to eat Mammoth remains which had been found frozen in northern Siberia near the gulags, as Solzenitzen claimed.

If so, then it must have resulted from a reduction of the solar radiation on the Earth.

It could happen again, as opposed to global warming because of human, carbon emissions.

Politics aside I think this is fascinating. To think the earth's climate could change so dramatically so quickly.

Oddly enough I just started reading Sci-Fi called “Fallen Angel” by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Michael Flynn. It’s about a sudden ice age.

It should be pointed out that this applies strictly to Europe. Something pretty similar could happen today if the Gulf Stream was diverted for some reason. London is north of the US-Canadian border.

I thought the last ice age ended about 10-13 k years ago and was about 60-80 k years long? This story doesn’t add up.

There was a sudden resurgence of cold conditions about 13,000 years ago. Geologists refer to this period as the “Younger Dryas”. Some people have theorized that a glacial ice dam, holding back glacial Lake Agassiz, burst, and an enormous quantity of cold fresh water was released into the North Atlantic, via Hudson’s Bay, thus radically changing the ocean currents and plunging the earth back into an ice age.
