Arctic Sea Ice - Daily Comparison
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ^ | Daily | Department of Atmospheric Sciences, UI-UC

Over the past few days, a plethora of articles have been published saying that Arctic ice is melting at a faster rate than last year, which was a recent historical record, and the North Pole will soon be ice free. The graphic below and link to this thread show the opposite:

As for the North Pole being ice free, there are openings in the sea ice that don't mean the entire surrounding area is free of ice:

Thanks, is there a link to a site where we can get these type of pictures on a daily basis?

The satellite picture above is from the MODIS satellites which provide near real-time visible images - maybe an hour or two old (I like visible because it is a real picture - it has not been massaged by a global warming programmer at the NSIDC like the other radar/software-generated images.)

The downside is that clouds can get in the way and it is not taking pictures of Antarctica right now (since it is in 24 hours of darkness) - nighttime sections of pictures are not shown.

The MODIS sats require a little getting use to. They take a picture every 5 to 10 minutes or so in their polar orbits - you have to click through PREV and NEXT to get the location and orientation you want. Different resolutions are available down to 250M and various filters let you distinguish clouds from ice. Start with 4km resolution till you get used to it.

Edit your Favourite link as the below since this link will automatically take you back to the same day each time unless you take the date out.

Yes, that is one of the stories I read, another one mentioned huge volcanos forming on the sea floor. It was previously thought to be too deep—therefore too much pressure—for volcanic eruptions. Apparently one of the biggies had strewn rubble out 10km around it, as I recall. There appears to be a lot of undersea activity that we have very little knowledge of.

But just a few short months ago we had this:

Arctic Ice Increasing Between Canada And Greenland. "Highest Level Of Ice In 15 Years."

And we need it to warm up because....

Um, aren’t there billions of barrels under the Gull Island holes (way up there) which were capped a few decades ago without pumping them out?
