Norman Baker is an American hero who has been detained against his will for more than three years.

His "crime": owning too much property.

His sentence: a court-appointed guardianship on the brink of costing him everything he spent his life building.

Wow ... if that one case where a lawyer needs to be shot ... that’s it.

Forgive me, but I am going absolutely insane trying to read various articles as of late. This one goes on for SEVERAL PARAGRAPHS, making the reader ask “how the hell did this all come about - did the state just come by at random and decide to put the poor guy into a nursing home?”

The author could have saved all of his readers some agony by simply putting this paragraph at the beginning of the story:

“Baker’s troubles began in January, 2005, when he suffered a urinary tract infection. Reports for elder abuse are confidential and it is unclear who made the recommendation that his affairs be turned over to a guardian.”

instead of down at PARAGRAPH 22!!!!!

Sorry for my rant.

Anyway, yes, this is a terrible situation, and I will contact the authorities at the address you provided.

mark, can not bear to read the article just now. Our system is so corrupt that those who confidently use it to destroy all nobility perhaps deserve our respect, compliance, and without doubt, awe.

If you will note that under the "Free Press" banner is the phrase "speaking truth to power". The last time I heard that it was being uttered by John Kerry! There were links to other Free Press articles dedicated to the issue of impeaching Bush, Cheney, etc. What I'm saying is don't get all exercised about this article without verifying from other sources as this one extremely suspect.

WTF ! One question in mind, I wonder if the guardian and the judge are in "bed together" ?

It is amazing how someone ho has some money gets others to find ways to knock them down. I myself have some assets and I am debt free. As mentioned before, I had one manager where I worked at ask a lot of personal questions concerning my finances. I am currently looking at a job where they want me to permit them to look at my finances through my credit report and they even want to look at my driving record ! I think they don't need to know it unless I am driving a company vehicle which I won't get anyway. The same on finances if I had to deal with the company books.

I don't know about other states but the situation in Ohio is obscene. I am familiar with a number of people who have been literally confinred and looted by "guardians," colluding judges, and unethical nursing home administrators.

Certain administrators will do whatever they have to do to keep a bed filled, including lie cheat and steal.

The typical attitude of these low-level magistrates is "I don't want to bother with this crap so don't even bring it to my bench anymore." Often they are close personal and "professional" associates with the shysters they appoint as guradians, who run up billable hours for nothing, and squander the assets they are supposed to manage .

"I never dreamed such a thing could happen in this country," he told the Free Press. "

Warning - this is rampant across the country...there are many crooked lawyers that prey on wealthy elderly exactly like this.

I had a neighbor lady who was just one more step away from the 'involuntary' move to a nursing home. The lawyer already had her home and all assets signed over to him and his wife - her jewelry "for safety" kept in HIS safe - the home was picked out and her move was imminent. She was in her 90's - but sharp as a tack, still able to live on her own.

But she had no family and was a perfect target.

I got her to an honest lawyer and the crooked one, faced with charges, capitulated and signed everything back to her.

“However, throughout the United States, tens of thousands of elderly citizens with significant assets have been placed under court-appointed guardians. “

This happened to someone I know. A ditant acquanitance came in and was able to get power of attorney over a retired couple and steal all of their estate. Sold the home and liquidated the property and put it into their own bank account. The couple and their family could do nothing to stop it. The couple got sent to a nursing home where the man died and his wife is still held there against her will. The family has given up trying to battle the lawyers and judges. Very scary. Anyone can basically steal away your life if there is a judge to declare you incompetent and allow it to happen.

There’s something crooked going on in this case between the guardian attorney and the judge. They both can’t be THIS incompetent and unconcerned.
