Sox-Yankees spat cited in N.H. killing
The Boston Globe ^ | 5/5/08 | Boston.com

NASHUA, N.H.—A woman accused of running down a man in her car after a Red Sox-Yankees argument in a bar never hit her brakes as she accelerated toward the small group he was in, a prosecutor said Monday. more stories like this "She never braked, and she accelerated at a high speed for about 200 feet. She went directly at this group of people," prosecutor Susan Morrell said of Ivonne Hernandez, who is charged with reckless second-degree murder in the death early Friday of Matthew Beaudoin, 29. Authorities won't describe the argument beforehand in Slade's Food & Spirits, but witnesses said it heated up when Hernandez identified herself as a New York Yankees fan. Like the rest of New Hampshire, Nashua, 45 miles northwest of Boston, is Red Sox country. Bartender Tanya Moran said the argument spilled outside, and at least one person in a group that included Beaudoin began chanting "Yankees suck!" when they saw a Yankees sticker on Hernandez's car. Hernandez, 43, allegedly gunned her car and struck Beaudoin and his friend Maria Hughes, 21. Hughes had only minor injuries, which Beaudoin's sister Faith said was because her brother shielded his friend. Hernandez, of Nashua, was arrested at the scene. She acknowledged she had been drinking and refused to take a breath-alcohol test, said Morrell, a senior assistant attorney general. Hernandez said she had been in an argument with the group. "She indicated to police that she wanted to scare this group of people. She thought they would get out of the way," Morrell said. Hernandez was ordered held without bail after being arraigned Monday in Nashua District Court. The charges, including aggravated drunken driving, are felonies, so Hernandez could not enter a plea. Her public defender, James Quay, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

you are talking about the franchise

this year’s Yankee team has nothing in common with all those championship years other than the uniforms look similar

The Pirates could have purchased a bunch of new talent & what did they spend their money on???? A new stadium.

They'd rather get the sure money from corporate boxes then roll the dice on better players for a run at the WS.

That's fact.

If I was in Massachusetts, the last thing I would want to do is go into a bar like that and start shooting my mouth off that I was a Yankee fan. I mean thats just common sense. Obviously that woman has 0 of it.

Hmmm, let's see. The NYY have broken no rules. To use as an excuse they win because they spend there own money to get the better players is nonsense. The other side of the coin is they PAY more to the smaller teams in revenue sharing then any other 2 teams combined pay. They are not only the most successful franchise in the history of sports as far as wins, they are the most successful franchise in sports history as far as earnings. Steinbrenner has taken a club he purchased for $10,000,000 in the early 70's and turned it into a $1,500,000,000 colossus. Yankee bashing is a tradition in America but all of it is born of pure jealousy.

Teams change year to year. It is the tradition that makes the Yankees the great team they are. They are not always going to win and as an example all you need do is look at their record from 1965 to 1975 or so and you will see how bad a team can get. However through it all they had that great tradition and when Steinbrenner bought the team he used that tradition as a plum to get the best players (surely the money helped). Players want to win more then anything and playing for the Yankees after Steinbrenner bought the team gave them the opportunity. There are very few young kids today that are considering baseball as a career who wouldn't love to play for the New York Yankees.

As far as I know they are the only team whose players, while traveling wear suits a ties. They do not have beards and all haircuts are conventional. This is not something that wins or loses games but it does speak to the professionalism of the franchise and the players.

How is the “Coupe” doing up there? My pal who lives on the Cape says his approval ratings are in the low 30’s and he is frantically looking for ways to raise taxes there even more to fund all his give away programs.

As a typical NY type, you screw up the accent, it is BWany. In Mass it is all economics, I worked in New Bedford when the previous Pervert reigned, the Portagee, rabid Catholics, kept him in office.

Damn Yankee fans! Within my very own family there are a few of them running around. They are missing chromosomes. Ok, I’m just kidding...sort of.

Gets old, doesn’t it? One of the tenets of conservatism is the importance of the individual, yet so many here would rather take the easy, and often leftist, way of refusing that important conservative ideal.

How many illegals are Yankee fans to the point of killing?

As a RS fan you ought to know by now that it is always impossible to count the NYY out. They are just 3 games out of 1st despite their pitching staff problems with injuries and the slow start of the young Kennedy pitcher. Arod is injured, Jeter missed 6 games and as of today Giambi is hitting .155. All this will change. Last year the Yankees were about 9 games back at this time and were 14 games under .500 by the end of May.

Now the RS pitching, there supposed strong suit has, with the exception of Dice-k been very very ordinary and despite being a physically sound team have won 3 games more then NY.

No one knowledgeable of baseball can claim the NYY don't have the tools to win it all. It doesn't mean the will of course because the season is a long and difficult race and injuries play a big part in determining who comes out on top.

That said the RS have a long, long history of starting out like a house on fire each year and fading badly after June while the NYY do exactly the opposite.

We shall see.
