The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

7.8 is good... will get yuh about 1050 fps with a 115 gr projo...

how heavy a projo are you loadin’ the .45?... Blue Dot is not optimum for 230 gr...

Well said, that’s a great summary of case measurement and die setting. Micrometers are our friends. Even the digital ones aren’t that spendy these days.

Yup, Unique for it all, 9mm, .38 and .45 both the long and short versions. I have a can of Win Ball 293 I think, don’t use it much, it’s for the full bore .357 loads with a jacketed bullet. I don’t actually shoot many jacketed ones once I get a load set. Lead makes punching holes in paper or knocking down steel plates that much cheaper.

Head back this way in July for MoJAM, our pot-luck there is something else to behold. Not a bit a store bought meat. In fact, there isn’t any visible roadkill anywhere within a 50 mile radius of the place.

I’m on the last pound of 231... never loaded Unique in .45, tho it’s an easy swap... and I don’t own a 9... doesn’t mean I dont load it...

most excellent... truth be told, the accuracy excuse for handloading has pretty much evaporated... factory loads have improved light years...

I believe the Federal 168 gr load, when put in a plain brown box, is the current military "special match" ammo for sniper rifles.

Several years ago, I read an article in American Rifleman that says the Army discovered a considerable improvement in their match ammo by just switching bullets to Sierra Super Matchking over their own design. Didn't touch anything else about the load.

Oh, and I got around to ordering my Dewey coated cleaning rods and action guide. These types of weapons love the finest of everything.

Give it a try, Unique is a good all around powder. Yes, there are likely other better for certain loads or guns but I like to keep it simple. Older folks tend to confused with too many choices. :-)

Get five reloaders together and you’ll get ten opinions on any given load or caliber.

We’re using 231 on the 45 I think... our bad intell said that 4.2 gr on 231 would do for the 9mm... that was a lie...

Ain't dat the truf. :-)

Almost all of my handgun reloading was with Win231. For .357 and .45. I did some with Bullseye and some with blue-dot but kept coming back to 231 since it was so clean. I can't say that there's any truly rational basis for it.

I was gonna suggest a Three Bean Salad, with black, kidney, and white beans (cannellini). I found a great salad dressing/marinade from Wish Bone called Bountifuls, and their Santa Fe dressing mixed with the beans and some red onion is vey tasty. I think I got the recipe off the Wish Bone website. I made a Corn and Black Bean salad the other night, too, and it was good. I think I got that recipe on allrecipes.com

Still loading the 45 with 231. I did notice the projectiles are binding a little at the outer edge of the chamber. Some that were really a tight fit had a millimeter of scratches on the jacket around the base. But then I also noticed those cases were not as well cleaned as some others that were just fine. Sizing off some factory loads I seated them all a smidge lower. between that, a good gun cleaning and running the cleaner longer next time I might have cleaned the issue up.

I'm reading this...very good read. By the same guy that did the Polyface Farm Model touted here. It's kinda what we're doing with our meat chickens, on a very small scale.

Everyone that finds out what we're doing hits us up to buy a bird. One lady offered to trade us a pound of picked pecans for one.

I'm going to a neurologist. The same one that I saw over 10 years ago when I had a migraine where I lost the vision in my right eye, like what happened in 2005. Maybe she'll figure out what's caused me to permanently loose the vision now and what keeps causing this headaches.

>But driving back we saw 4-5 ~dozen~ bunnies in the grass

Kinda good to know that you won’t starve, if something happens to the national food supply, huh?

Heh heh!!

“I’m so hungry! Well, I’ll be! There’s a snack right over there. And there! And there!”

LOL!!! I’m just entertaining myself. Good morning.

We have bunnies in the yard but no way to catch them... neighbors wouldn’t take kindly to us shooting out the back window I think.

I got the message about the sale, but haven’t looked yet.

‘Course, right now I have about a bazillion guitar books and CDs and such I want to buy...so I think I’ll have to be content with my current stockpiles o’ paper and ink. ;-)

Matthew lost his Preppy. Actually he lost his whole Bible and it was inside his Bible case.

:-(

We’re still hoping it will show up.
