The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I see how it is.

You just don’t love us any more. Sniff.

How’re the new tunes coming?

We're planning to see The Dark Knight when it comes to the IMAX theater a couple of towns over. We saw Batman Begins there, and that flurry of bats, when Batman is rescuing Rachel at the asylum was just awesome on the HUGH screen!

More like I love you guys enough to spare you the boredom I could inflict. ;-)

I’ve determined there are at least three or four CDs I really must have so I can hear some of the tunes I fell in love with at Kamp, and at least two books as well. *sigh* Eventually.

I’m going to a jam / barbecue next Saturday, so I’ll get to see some of the local music folks again. I have to figure out what to bring, though. It’s potluck, and I need something a) easy and b) transportable. Have to cart it close to an hour. Any ideas?

Nacho stuff is easy if you’ve got a good crockpot, brown the beef and cook it with a jar of salsa for a couple hours, then reheat before serving, bring along some chips and cheese and you’re good.

Or make brownies.

Nacho stuff might could work...though I dunno that there’d be a place to plug in a crock pot, so maybe not.

Brownies seem like a cop-out. But maybe by Friday I’ll be all for a cop-out. ;-)

made the mistake when I first started of loading 500 rds that "looked" good, but didn't chamber...

The first 11 9mm did not cycle the slide :P

The second 50 .45 are failing to go all the way to battery about every 4th or 5th round.

I know the cause of the first problem but am not sure yet what to do about the second.

There’s some bloomin’ bushes around here that I want to try to take back to Richmond. I saw one at a nursery last night and am going to stop by and see if they think I could grow it in Richmond. I’ve seen them in dark pink (that we have here at thebeachhouse), light pink and white. I have no idea what they’re called.

We’ll probably wait until later in the week when everyone is here. Sister and lawn and their younguns are coming tomorrow. Sister Mary Hamburner may stay the rest of the week. I’ll give you at least a day’s notice and then nail down the time.

We drove over the sound to Manteo to get dinner last night. Was gonna grill, but it’s way too windy. And since we’re still smelling the smoke from the fires in Dismal Swamp we thought the better of it.

But driving back we saw 4-5 ~dozen~ bunnies in the grass along the side of the road (on the way to the bridge). I know they multiply fast and all. I’ve just never seen that a herd of ‘em all together like that.

Pasta salad is a good picnic standby. Get creative and add weird veggies and cheeses...

Mm...that sounds like a good idea. Dad makes it with feta and different kinds of olives, plus the usual veggies. Good. And, more importantly, quick and relatively cheap...

It’s sad how much I’m looking forward to this. I miss playing music with other folks already. I really wish I knew of more local people of about my ability and with similar musical interests. Breaking into a local music network can be tricky — there was a whole world I didn’t know about even in my dinky home town, until I met a few folks through an open mic who told me about other in-home type gatherings. It’s all word of mouth.

But this jam is a good start.

Heh...did you hear me set off the alarm on my car this morning? Oops...

I was trying to carry out Cisco’s big bowl o’ water, plus all my stuff for work, and I accidentally squeezed the panic button on the key chain in the process. Fortunately, with this car you just have to push the button again and it shuts up instantly. Much easier than the van, where usually I had to fight it for a few long minutes and never knew what actually switched it off.

I had to calm Cisco down before heading out to work. He was circling the car all tense and wild-eyed, staring at it. He was over by it when the alarm started, poor guy. I don’t know if he thought it was his fault or what!

Let’s eliminate the pistol... Try putting some factory loads thru it... does the problem still exist?... is the feed ramp marred in anyway?... how ever slightly?... get it polished...

clean the chamber thoughly with a brass chamber brush and good solvent (Hoppe’s or Shooter’s Choice)...

make sure you are getting the correct seating dept... If you load 230 gr FMJ, get a factory load that has no problems going into battery consistantly, use that as as guide for seating and crimping. What kind of dies do you have? 3 or 4 die set?

be sure you are consistant with your strokes on the ram... go to a full stop every round...

‘Zat what Southern ladies’ hospitality advises?

We’re driving out to Pittsburgh Thursday to spend the weekend with my folks. Do you know I think it’s a minimum of 16 hours’ drive in any direction to get to a beach?

Heh - that was you? Yeah - we heard it... and said “Ooops!”

Funny that Cisco cared about it.

The guns pretty dirty but it shoots anything. Armscor, Philippines knockoff 1911. little loose tolerances but that just makes is super reliable plus it's trigger is lighter than my Springfield. So yeah, I will give it a good cleaning but my money would be on that not being it.

Some of the rounds that failed to fully feed would not even go tall the way home with a firm heel of the hand smack to the back of the slide. It would be between 1/8 and 1/2 inch back from full battery. Some would seat with a smack and some just had to be cycled out. Next time if I get any like that I will save them and slap the calipers all over them. My Springfield is clean so I will put some through that next time to compare too.

It is a 3 die set, 4 if if you count the power stage. Size, Bell&powder, seat, crimp. Seat height looked pretty good. Bell seemed fine. Could not really tell about crimp.
The dies themselves are Dillons too.

I think my strokes were consistent but the proof is in what kind of performance you get in... What were we talking about again?

The 9s were funny. The powder I had (231) was not listed for 9 in the book so I hit the web... but clearly I did not hit it hard enough because the slide did not move and they sounded about like .22s
Heh, oops :P
I am going to double check the weight of our 9mm projectiles and do some better searching for loads. Also I have two other brands of powder to try now.

It was 21 hours from Ohio to Florida for us in 2000, although I’m starting to think that whole trip was a mistake.
