Word For The Day, Thursday, May 1, 2008 - cloy
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 1 May 2008 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cloy \KLOY\, transitive verb:
1. To weary by excess, especially of sweetness, richness, pleasure, etc.
2. To become distasteful through an excess usually of something originally pleasing.

Example sentences:
The opulence, the music, the gouty food -- all start to cloy my senses.
-- Jeffrey Tayler, "The Moscow Rave part two: I Have Payments to Make on My Mink", Atlantic, December 31, 1997

I use orange and lemon zest in the recipe and a drizzle of soured cream at the table to take away its tendency to cloy.
-- Nigel Slater, "Cream tease", The Observer, December 14, 2003

The soft Orvieto Abboccato has just enough sweetness to please but not to cloy, a friendly character that tempts one to linger over a second glass.
-- George Pandi, "Orvieto's pleasures deserve to be savored like its wine", Boston Herald, July 18,2004

Etymology:
Cloy is short for obsolete accloy, "to clog," alteration of Middle English acloien, "to lame," from Middle French encloer, "to drive a nail into," from Medieval Latin inclavare, from Latin in, "in" + clavus, "nail."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

he is totally out of his mind on the oil companies though, just deranged on that score. sitting there listening to her say that she would set an arbitrary level for oil co. profits and then start taxing above it, and not calling her on it. though, as he told miller who called him on that, he could have gone after her on this stuff but wanted to cover more subject areas.

Reverend Wright stirred the pot to annoy
While Obama just tried playing coy
But an internal poll
Cast Barack as Bob Dole
Speaking gently was starting to cloy

I enjoy watching him too. I think he tries to be fair.... my brother (very conservative) thinks he’s a liberal, and my cousin (horrendously liberal) think O’s a conservative.

They're both wrong. He's simply a narcissist.

i take people as they are. i have friends who are impossibly self-absorbed, obnox braggarts etc. but they have redeeming qualities that allow me to get beyond whatever aggravating foibles they may have and to like and enjoy their company despite them. that’s me and Mr. O. i see redeeming qualities, he makes me laugh my butt off at times. sometimes with him, often, at him.

he can be self-deprecating and that excuses a lot. an obnox braggart who takes himself seriously, i can not handle.

He refers to himself in the third person as, “Your humble correspondent.”

Secret smacked me upside the head when I referred to myself in the third person, once.
