Word For The Day, Thursday, May 1, 2008 - cloy
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 1 May 2008 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cloy \KLOY\, transitive verb:
1. To weary by excess, especially of sweetness, richness, pleasure, etc.
2. To become distasteful through an excess usually of something originally pleasing.

Example sentences:
The opulence, the music, the gouty food -- all start to cloy my senses.
-- Jeffrey Tayler, "The Moscow Rave part two: I Have Payments to Make on My Mink", Atlantic, December 31, 1997

I use orange and lemon zest in the recipe and a drizzle of soured cream at the table to take away its tendency to cloy.
-- Nigel Slater, "Cream tease", The Observer, December 14, 2003

The soft Orvieto Abboccato has just enough sweetness to please but not to cloy, a friendly character that tempts one to linger over a second glass.
-- George Pandi, "Orvieto's pleasures deserve to be savored like its wine", Boston Herald, July 18,2004

Etymology:
Cloy is short for obsolete accloy, "to clog," alteration of Middle English acloien, "to lame," from Middle French encloer, "to drive a nail into," from Medieval Latin inclavare, from Latin in, "in" + clavus, "nail."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

i probably could have made it through engineering school at Pitt

Well, who couldn't? LOL

Don't most med/dent-types take biology or something more useful?

my brother squeaked through with a C avg in Chem E/Petroleum E from Pitt and worked for Halliburton for 25 years, and only left to go with one of their competitors who would not move him all around the country. I don't think a private university would have gotten him a better job, and would have cost a whole lot more.

Med/Dent types can do a science major but then if they don't get into the professional school what good is a Chem or Bio degree? it's not worth squat. like i said, she will do engineering and if she likes it, that can be her career, if she isn't jazzed about it, she can apply to professional school. She is a brainiac, i know she will do well at either.

What cute bears! Now, if they could just be trained to live in the woods away from humans...

4 of last year’s new set of 5 hostas have come up. I like them now but they were an acquired taste.

My Catholic school didn’t offer honors anything. You were either college prep in the A, B, or C classes or you co-oped in business. The public schools didn’t have honors classes back then either. It would’ve been nice and much more economical to get college credit back in HS, but that was not an option.

There is a candidate most cloying,
who's laugh is most annoying.
She cackles like a witch,
the loathsome bitch.
with the presidency she is toying.

i know what you mean. i never cared for them, but then i figured that it was because i thought of them as too pedestrian, i tended to NOT like the stuff my gram had in her yard, when i was younger— hydrangeas, geraniums, hostas. i have gotten over that and now like all three again. that back corner just looked so sad and desolate bc of the shrubs being bare at the lower part of their branches. these 3 hostas have brightened it up. there is one lonely astilbe there but it doesn’t do too much, maybe it will be happier now with the hostas for company : )

with all of the obsession these days with self-esteem and worrying if one kid feels inferior to another, it is astounding to look back and see the tracking they did back then. my junior high school had tracks 1-7. so you were in 7-1 if you were one of the smarties and barely scraping by, vo-tech if you were in 7-7, and then distributed accordingly in between. sounds shocking to me today.
