Word For The Day, Thursday, May 1, 2008 - cloy
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 1 May 2008 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cloy \KLOY\, transitive verb:
1. To weary by excess, especially of sweetness, richness, pleasure, etc.
2. To become distasteful through an excess usually of something originally pleasing.

Example sentences:
The opulence, the music, the gouty food -- all start to cloy my senses.
-- Jeffrey Tayler, "The Moscow Rave part two: I Have Payments to Make on My Mink", Atlantic, December 31, 1997

I use orange and lemon zest in the recipe and a drizzle of soured cream at the table to take away its tendency to cloy.
-- Nigel Slater, "Cream tease", The Observer, December 14, 2003

The soft Orvieto Abboccato has just enough sweetness to please but not to cloy, a friendly character that tempts one to linger over a second glass.
-- George Pandi, "Orvieto's pleasures deserve to be savored like its wine", Boston Herald, July 18,2004

Etymology:
Cloy is short for obsolete accloy, "to clog," alteration of Middle English acloien, "to lame," from Middle French encloer, "to drive a nail into," from Medieval Latin inclavare, from Latin in, "in" + clavus, "nail."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Home from work and getting ready to cook sausage and (gag!) sauerkraut for hubby-for me, there is leftover grilled lamb and salad-

Hillary’s talk with O’Reilly
Was more like a clever skit
Designed not to be cloying
But to really not say s***

Ego stroking and compliments
Were all there was to hear
I half expected them to call
Each other “darling” and “dear”

Having two such egomaniacs
On one program and station
Just turned into a lovefest
Of fawning mutual admiration

i just planted three hostas around the back side of the deck, the shrubs that are back there are reaching REACHING for some sunlight and the lower part of them is just bare.

Thank you! I had to turn off that “interview” last night because she was so smarmy and smiley when she told Bill how she would never have expected fair and balanced from Fox-yech! I caught the highlights of it after I got home and was getting dinner together.

Acting more like a boy with a toy,
Hillary tends to annoy AND cloy.

I love hostas, but they do not do well here except in pots-all the shade at my house is on the north (front) and east facing sides, because that is where all the big trees are-the deck is all bright sunshine and the bare rocks of the cliff, except for one paltry corner where there is a really huge mountain laurel.

Titus is asleep on his back on my lap again after being removed from the keyboard-he sleeps so soundly that even my jamming to the stereo is not disturbing him.
