In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
cloy \KLOY\, transitive verb:
1. To weary by excess, especially of sweetness, richness, pleasure, etc.
2. To become distasteful through an excess usually of something originally pleasing.
Example sentences:
The opulence, the music, the gouty food -- all start to cloy my senses.
-- Jeffrey Tayler, "The Moscow Rave part two: I Have Payments to Make on My Mink", Atlantic, December 31, 1997
I use orange and lemon zest in the recipe and a drizzle of soured cream at the table to take away its tendency to cloy.
-- Nigel Slater, "Cream tease", The Observer, December 14, 2003
The soft Orvieto Abboccato has just enough sweetness to please but not to cloy, a friendly character that tempts one to linger over a second glass.
-- George Pandi, "Orvieto's pleasures deserve to be savored like its wine", Boston Herald, July 18,2004
Etymology:
Cloy is short for obsolete accloy, "to clog," alteration of Middle English acloien, "to lame," from Middle French encloer, "to drive a nail into," from Medieval Latin inclavare, from Latin in, "in" + clavus, "nail."
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Rise and shine!
i’m up : )
Ugh.
(Robt climbs out of the lube oil tank fer a second, looks around.)
(Grabs cup of coffee from xsex.)
Vastie and CJ wonder why he didn’t grab xsex....)
The platitudes abscenely become cloying,
With words the politicos are toying,
But with a flash of his ire,
Jeremiah set Barry afire,
And now here comes Michelle, most annoying!
Mernin...
The entire interview was O’Reilly asking mediocre softball questions and her acting cloy and avoiding answers. I thought the interview was pretty typical of his treatment of Politicians.
8 AM and Robert’s already in the tank. LOL
i’ll tell ya why, bc i would have slapped ya senseless ya weirdo! ; )
A+ for you. I saw him on Shep’s show and chose to watch hockey instead of the cloying Mr O and her heinous.
your pome would make an excellent jib jab type skit!
Robert, are you home yet?
Well done. A+ for you.
he was very puffed up and pleased with himself, though, and now he is agitating for the obams to come on. guess he feels shown up by chris wallace getting him first. Mr O is a bombastic egomaniac, but i like him despite it. i get a kick out of him and we laugh at his hubris.
I really don’t think he has a lube oil tank at his house.
Sounded to me like Dennis cloyed* Bill a good 'um. I watched the replay early this morning as I did intervals.
*(See Medieval French: encloer- to drive a nail in.)
We never assume anything about Robert. ;)
A for interval man.
I enjoy watching him too. I think he tries to be fair.... my brother (very conservative) thinks he’s a liberal, and my cousin (horrendously liberal) think O’s a conservative.
