Most Americans have no idea...
I went to Mexico regularly between 1993 and 1998. The weather is idyllic the beaches and the diving are great, but there the attraction ends.
Even in safe tourist areas, the resentment and hate run deep and, so long as the Mexican locals are "sure" that you can't understand their version of Spanish and their slang words and phrases, they are not shy about continuing their conversations, many of which can be hair-raising.

After a few years of that I simply decided that the risk could not possibly outweigh the benefits.

Bear in mind that in all the high American tourist areas, the crime against Americans, (rapes, robberies, murders and mysterious disappearances) are dealt with in the simplest of methods to keep the money rolling in: by official agreement and enforcement, they are simply not reported. Very effective, that.

The best advice: try Hawaii.

I'll try to contain my rage over the ignorance of your racist comment and others I've seen on this thread. And let me assure you that Mexicans don't hate us. They are an impoverished country and the people are generally loving and warm.

I'll agree with you however that the driving in Mexico is dangerous, scary and it's unwise to drive your car there.

Having actually lived in Mexico I'll offer these tips: 1) carry cash to bribe the Policia should you get pulled over and can't outrun them 2) ignore the stop signs ("Alto"), just slow down and honk your horn as you drive through intersections 3) feel free to make multiple trips around the roundabouts 4) the lines on the streets mean nothing so don't feel you need to stay on your side of the road
