What suprises me is that the Pats are number 7, considering they were in the Super Bowl.

The NFL draft - as are all sports “drafts” - has become so institutionalized that many (even many “conservatives”) do not realize that it flagrantly violates the most basic principles of free market economics.
The best football players coming out of college are denied the right that is accorded their fellow collegians who are coming out as engineers, computer scientists, chemists, etc., etc.: the right to freely choose their employer and place of employment.

Considering the available crop of talent this year, no team wanted to trade up for Miami's Number One pick and be stuck paying Lexus prices for a Ford Taurus.
As it was, Miami signed Jake Long for a 5 year, $57.5 million contract which seems pretty pricey for an OL.
Could Miami have done better?
As I understand it, the rules allow waiving your Number One pick to have the next team to choose first with the privilege of getting back in line whenever you wish. That other team then gets stuck with the Number One Pick price tag.
Should the Fish have exercised that option?
Should they have picked "Howie's Kid" Long, instead?
Any opinions?

The 7th pick is from the 49ers that they got in a trade/deal. They actually lost their number one pick, would have been number 31, because of “spygate”. ;)

"What suprises me is that the Pats are number 7, considering they were in the Super Bowl."
Actually the Pats' first round pick was taken away as part of the cheating penalty. That #7 pick is one they got as part of a deal with another team a year ago.

That’s the thing about trading for first round picks the following year. You never really know how high or low they’re going to wind up being.

ESPN reported the Chiefs have 15 picks this draft. Wow!

Well time will tell. If he turns into another Orlando Pace then it was definitely worth it. Dominate left tackles in my opinion are only less important than you're starting quarterback.

I’m really intrigued at what they’re going to do at #5.

Apparently they want at least 75% of their picks to start this season. They're not looking to bring them along slowly.

Our family is actually going to be watching the draft this year. A friend of ours has a son that is expected to be drafted. Kalani Heppe, from NC state. 6'4', 315 lbs guard. GREAT kid - dad is a Baptist minister, he is a devout Christian, graduated from a local high school. Granted, he's not expected to be a high pick, they are hoping for 4th round or so.
Fingers crossed for him!
To: mainepatsfan
Does that include QB?
I don't know.

There are plenty of people out there who think he will wind up playing RT. Gholston owned him back in college and that’s even taking plays off!
Too bad people had doubts about Dorsey. He would have been a nice centerpiece to the D-line in Miami.
I think Miami should have traded down and stockpiled picks but that’s just me.

O-Lineman since they addressed their D-line with the Allen trade.

One thing this draft shows is how important timing is. Matt Ryan is fortunate the competition at his position this draft is considered to be pretty weak (of course we now how perfect the draft “experts” are don’t we? /s).

It seems as though from what I've heard the NFL is focusing more on character this year after the off field problems that occurred last season. We'll see if that comes true. I'm sure his background can only help. Good luck to him!
