Believe it. You are right regarding the M4 unless it was in 22lr/wmr - the Ruger 10/22 is legal, but any semi-auto rifle apart from calibre 22lr/wmr is illegal(banned since 1988). Alternatively they are legal as a straight pull bolt action and thus so configured are used in practical rifle shooting (like IPSC but with rifles). I have two Ruger 10/22's with Volquartsen Trigger Assemblies, those would be legal over there.
I knew that the U.K. has passed some anti-gun laws some years ago, which is hard to understand, considering its vast and rich firearms manufacturing, ownership and history.
