OK, I had to come and gloat. The first girl tonight, Jessica Brown. We go to church with the her parents. Poor kid has been through a lot more in life than they talked about, but she is a trooper.

Here is a local news story about her.

http://www.news-journal.com/hp/content/news/stories/2008/01/16/01162008_American_Idol.html

She has been in the local theater too and she is a complete trooper. Needless to say, that is who I am rooting for.

Is ‘Idol’ lying to us all?

At least two “American Idol” contestants this season have established recording backgrounds.

Kristy Lee Cook, the contender played up Tuesday for selling a horse to get to the audition, was once signed to a label and Spears’ production company and BMI. Carly Hennessy, who will be seen soon, was once the subject of a huge Wall Street Journal story because of all the money MCA put into her 2002 album “Ultimate High” which ultimately sold less than 500 copies.

“I think it ruins the show,” Maura Johnston, editor of the blog Idolator, told abc.news. “I think it’s treading too closely to the line that they’re trying to fool the viewer into thinking these people have real back stories and are totally new to the business.”

Johnston guessed that “Idol” makers might be reacting to the flat sales of show winners and are “trying to go for the kind of people…who have been seen as having star potential by other executives. It’s not a sure thing, but it’s a little bit more of a sure thing.”

But New York Magazine says, “So what?”

“We’re not worried. In fact, much of the fun of American Idol comes from seeing bland, entitled semi-pros get put in their place by the tone-deaf Sanjayas of the world. Remember Melinda Doolittle, last season’s annoying, falsely modest (though hugely talented) professional backup singer? She’d recorded with Kirk Franklin, Michael McDonald, and Aaron Neville, then she came on Idol and lost to Blake Lewis. No matter how unfair it may seem to have pros in an amateur competition, we can all be sure that, in the end, America’s bad taste will prevail. “

Is the audition phase over? I only watch it when the actual contestants have been chosen.

Are all the guys this year really, really SHORT, or is Ryan standing on blocks?

Interesting night of performances. I’ve come to the conclusion that variety in the contestants is at least as important as quality in making the show entertaining, and the guys have variety this year.

1. Dave Cook(His best so far. Consistent performer who has been decent at worst)
2. David Hernandez(Thought he did a good job with that song)
3. David Archuleta(IMO, one of his weaker performance but he’s still good. I’ve found something to criticize though—that odd tongue thing he does about every other phrase is sort of toad-like; hadn’t noticed it until tonight but it bugged me once I did.)
4. Michael Johns(Not a great voice but a good performer)
5. Chikeze(Good singer but he’s boring which may be his downfall)
6-7(tie) Jason Castro(not a great voice or even a very good voice and no fantastic performing skills, but his ease while performing makes him difficult to dislike. Agree with Paula that his phrasing is his strength.) Luke Menard(A good singer but his voice is a bit too high pitched for me to really like him.)
8.Danny Noriega(For some reason I thought he could sing, but he’s done nothing since he made it to the top 24 to convince me that he can. And he’s consistently annoying.)

Who should go: Danny Noriega and Luke Menard or Jason Castro
Who will go: I’m going to say Danny Noriega and Chikeze

Just saw American Idol! It was ok tonight. I was expecting more from the 80’s but I did enjoy some of the songs.

I am so mad at FREEPERS though, for pointing out liberal songs that I had no idea that was liberal. Another Day in Paradise is a song I love!!! And FREEPERS have been bashing it because it discuss’ homelessness. I must have heard the song a million times and never knew that...lol. For me ignorance is bliss!!!

Luke who is a great guy and a few that is straight was pretty bad. Disappointing!

Danny Noriega should go home. I thought it was a disaster!!! Danny Noriega to me shows that God has a sense of humor. lol. How on Earth can that thing be a guy???? He is totally a girl.

Chikesee (Spello) was not great. Why did he pick that song???

Mike Johns sang another of my favorites and thought he did ok. Gotta love Breakfast Club, Elmo’s Fire and 16 Candles.

David Arch... Again, love the song and thought he did good.

David Hernandez was good but could be in trouble due to his old boss being a big mouth. See I could care less about David Hernandez being gay because he did the best he could to STFU about it (again ignorance is bliss for me. lol), but since his old boss decided to make some money and spill the beans he is going to be doomed eventually. He did ok with the song...not nearly as good as last week.

Jason Castro...A great song. Did not know it was exclusively 80’s song, but he did really well.

David Cook....good song. Surprised it was so good. I absolutely can’t stand the guy but gotta give him props for doing Hello so well.

Going home....Danny and Chickeze is my hope. Luke and Chickeze is reality.

Hopefully Luke can pull out an upset.

Interesting night of performances.

I’d rank them like this:

1.Carly(Flat out the best singer of the girls. I liked last week’s performance better but she was still very good tonight)
2.Amanda(What a difference a week[actually the song]makes. Have a feeling she’s going to make another very bad song choice somewhere along the way, and it will cost her next time)
3.Kristy(Her best performance. I hope she stays in a while longer because I like the twang in her voice. Disagree with Simon that she’s forgetable. I hope next week she’ll sing a genuine country song.)
4.Asia’h(Didn’t like the song choice but I enjoy watching her perform)
5.Brooke(Good take on the Benatar song. She still strikes me as being the Jason Castro of the girls—not a great voice but a decent, natural performer.)
6.Ramiele(Lackluster. Biggest disappointment of the night)
7.Syesha(Girl can sing, but there’s something flat about her. She brings a same-ness to all her performances that’s a little boring.)
8.Kady(One of her better efforts but it’s still too little too late.)

Who should go: Kady and...difficult to say who the other should be but I’ll go with Syesha.

Who will go: Kady for sure. And Syesha(but this one is really a toss-up among several—wouldn’t be shocked if it’s Kristy, Asia’h, Brooke, or Ramiele.)

Best line of the night:

Simon: “Maybe we made a mistake doing the Beatles two weeks in a row.”

I couldn’t agree more. Time to move on.

Interesting night of performances.

Ranking them:

1. David A.(Great voice. Going to be really tough to beat.)
2. David C.(He has really found his stride)
3. Chikeze(Another good performance)
4. Syesha(Her best performance. Wish she had stayed with the softer voice rather than pushing at the end of the song.)
5. Carly(Very talented but I’m not always happy with her performing choices.)
6. Amanda(I like that she knows what she wants to put forward and does it. Not much range but she relies on energy.)
7. Jason(Thought it was pretty good vocally. I don’t see him having the range to go much further though.)
8. Brooke(Bad song choice.)
9. Ramiele(Did okay but I’d rather she sing ballads.)
10. Kristy(Also okay but probably not enough to keep her from going home.)
11. Michael Johns(Tough night for him. Thought it was his weakest performance. Maybe I’m just getting tired of him.)

Who should go: Kristy(Good voice but she’s just never been able to step it up. Gets the nod over Michael because he’s been better from week to week.)

Who will go: Kristy(Disappointed I’m not going to get to see her perform a legit country song.)
