Six People Missing Near Chama, N.M., Family Snowmobile Trip Goes Very Wrong
KOAT TV7, Albuquerque ^ | January 7, 2008 | KOAT News

Two Farmington families have been missing since Friday, after a snowmobiling trip near Chama, N.M.

The Groen and Martin families travelled to the town near the New Mexico-Colorado border on Friday morning to enjoy the winter weather. All six headed out on snow mobiles, north of town, that morning.

A massive snow storm swamped the Chama area that day, and no one has heard from either family since. sponsor

"It's kind of frustrating waiting around here just waiting and knowing that they're up there needing help", said Larry Groen, the father of Jason Groen. Jason, his wife Shannon Groen and their daughter, Aspen Groen are missing along with their friends, Mike Martin, Missy Martin and their son, Jesse Martin.

Searches for the missing people were called off on Sunday due to the threat of avalanches in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. They resumed at 7 on Monday morning. New Mexico state police are leading the search effort along with volunteers and friends of the missing families.

Yesterday I heard it was snowing 15” and hour up there. Wolf Creek always gets a ton of snow too.

Hopefully the snowmobilers have found a cabin to hole up in (they’re supposed to be familiar with the area). The skiers, I’m not so optomistic.

Got about a foot here, and still coming down.

One of the AP stories out of CO has searchers finding the car of the two snowboarders at the Wolf Creek ski area parking lot. They may have gone out of bounds or into an avalanche area. Unfortunately, if they are not found soon, it will likely be spring before location, especially if they did not carry a gps locater. Twenty years ago, when I X-cty skied that area, we went single file and quietly across avalanche chutes so that if one came others could help find/rescue them.

That Cumbres area can be snowed in for weeks at a time...I grew up on the CO side of the pass. It seems strange to me that no one was aware of the possibility of these storms moving in.

I think the weather arrived early on them. Friday was nice, and Saturday was supposed to be better, but I went to the Albuquerque Range Saturday AM anticipating a nice day and about froze my butt off.

80% chance of snow at Alamosa today and tonight, temp. 13 now, high of 29, low of 4 below, basically same forecast for Chama via Weather.com. Will be colder at the higher altitudes.

Many prayers up for these people.

Got about a foot where I am and it’s still coming down. It’s been warm, so it is very heavy snow. I’m not going to bother to fight my way into town, only to fight back out this afternoon.
