That's what gets me too. If you look at the effects that various lifestyle modifications have on lifespan, the benefits are often surprisingly modest.
Obese people live only four to six months less than monastic Pritikin-dieting food Nazis. Even lifelong smokers have only about a year and a half less life expectancy than non-smokers. And by the age of eighty or so, the damage has been done, and enjoying a donut or a cigar or a glass of wine every day is not going to affect your remaining lifespan in any meaningful way.
Leave the old codgers in peace, I say, and let them choose for themselves whether or not to have a donut.
