Idolatry is not the worship of an object of wood or stone. More broadly understood, it encompasses the replacement of God, the True Source, with other sources of authority that are false. That is the true essence of idolatry.

Oh, don’t lecture me. I think you need your morning coffee if you didn’t discern from my jesting post that I know perfectly well that idolatry is broader than the worship of actual idols. On the other hand, I think your stress on ‘authority’ understates the baleful effects of replacing God with anything else.
