Tiger Woods tied a major championship record with a spectacular 63 in charging to a two-stroke lead over fellow American Scott Verplank in the second round of the U.S. PGA Championship on Friday.
Woods came agonizingly close to setting the all-time low round in a major as his putt for birdie at the 18th hole spun out of the cup leaving him to tap-in for par.
"I knew if I made that putt on the last hole, it would have been a nice little record to have," world number one Woods said about missing the birdie putt for 62. "But I guess 62 and a half is all right."
The remarkable round lifted Woods to six-under-par 134, two strokes better than Verplank, who shot a bogey-free round of 66.
Australian Geoff Ogilvy (68) and Canadian Stephen Ames (69) were tied at 137.
The 31-year-old American became the 21st player to shoot a 63 in one of the four major championships and the 10th to do so in a PGA Championship.
Greg Norman and Vijay Singh have both twice shot 63s in majors, and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark was the last to achieve it, posting the score in the third round of the 2005 PGA at Baltusrol.
SWELTERING DAY
World number one Woods, who stood six strokes off the pace after posting a one-over-par 71 in the opening round, scorched the Southern Hills layout late on another sweltering day with eight birdies against a lone bogey.

I got into golf relatively late in life and just about the time Tiger was just coming on the scene.
His work ethic is amazing and he shows a great respect for the history of the game and the all great players who came before him.
Im always pulling for Tiger. I want to see him break all the records. Records are made to be broken.
People dropping like flies, poor bunnies.
Lot's of pretty girls about and the sun's about to rise above the yardarm...so...
Smell you later!
Sergio signed an incorrect scorecard and has been disqualified.
Total and complete meltdown for the Spaniard.
Sergio has all the talent in the word yet always finds a way to lose. Tiger and Jordon were the best I’ve seen in the clutch.
Forget Tiger, where are the pics of his wife? (And her twin sister!)
You are kidding me,”What a stupid I am!”.
I think so too, just wish they were broken by someone not on the roids.
Jealousy is so unbecoming. Little gnats with nothing to show for their lives always trying to belittle their betters.
Tiger Woods is the Mozart of golf.
says the fella “on steroids”
He did?????????????????? I didn't hear that..........Whoa, total meltdown for Sergio.....
You're getting faster, it only took 8 posts for stupidity to make its entry........
It's funny but I now purposely seek out the Tiger Woods threads just to see how long it takes you to sniff it out then jump in and attempt to hijack the thread with your pathological obsession........
Every Tiger Woods thread for the past 3 years years has ultimately been hijacked by ArchieBunkerOnSteroids to the point that such threads end up dying out because people are sick of his crap and don't want to argue with him. File a complaint with the Mods, I just did........
And Barry Bonds is the Mozart of basball. He is still on the juice though.
Do you complain about the thousands of posters who make accusations about Barry Bonds, Mc Guire and Sosa? In my opinion, Tiger is right in that category. That is my opinion, and its starting to get legs...that's why I continue to express it. The guy has morphed from a skinny kid into an outside linebacker and anyone with critical thinking skills can see it.
Four years ago Dan Patrick made a direct accusation on ESPN radio....I think he has earned credibility during his 20 plus years as a sports announcer. He connected Tiger's swing change with his new enhanced physique and dropped the S word. On the heels of that, Nick Price and Greg Norman made a few half hearted statements about roids and golf.
Last year tiger was directly confronted with the issue and made a few jokes about golfers only being on hangover medicine. He then chaffed the accusation off and claimed he would test right now....please. After the US Open, several newspapers, including the USA Today ran stories about Tiger's new impressive physique. The defense was that Tiger was wearing tighter shirts....BS. During the British Open, Gary Player claimed that this was a problem as well. Of course, the press destroyed Player. The whispers are getting louder. and they will probably come from the retired guys who are not cashing in on the Tiger boom
I'm also amused by those, including you, who think that steroids cannot help golfers. If that is the case, why are the PGA, nationwide and collegiate golf scrambling trying to find a testing process and set standards. Why would they care if steroids could not possibly help a golfer???Its because roids does help a golfer as it helps baseball players
The PGA in fact has transformed its courses to accommodate the steroid cash cow called Tiger. The majors are 600 yards longer and lined by shin high rough. These set-ups eliminate 90% of the field from the get go and help Tiger, the best golfer who ever lived, make his money. He has the power to keep his club face square through deep rough and hit a 190 yard 9 iron through 10 inch rough, over a tree and stop in on the green (even back it up). He can also chip out of 10 inch rough to the shortside of the green and stop the ball on a dime....its incredible and due to his strength....no one else can do it.
You may not agree with me, but a growing number of people do and my accusations have more merit than the thousands of Freepers every day who claim Hillary is a dyke.
Cry to the mods about that, but you've posted some things that border on lunacy. At least my aggument is gaining momentum.
dont forget to remove the tin foil hat when stepping outdoors. that is if you ever venture out of the basement.
Tiger 13*
I know, I know, Momma and Poppa taught you the negros can’t be better than your heros. It’s not your fault, it’s just the way you was raised.
