Police chief: Man to be charged in Tacoma girl's kidnapping, death

TACOMA, Wash. -- A man currently being held for failing to register as a sex offender will likely be charged in connection with the death of 12-year-old Zina Linnik, who was kidnapped from behind her family's home on July 4.

"It is anticipated that he will eventually be charged for Zina's abduction and death," Tacoma Police Chief Don Ramsdell said at a news conference Friday afternoon. "The Linnik family is currently in our thoughts and prayers as they begin healing from this horrific event."

Terapon Adhahn, 42, had been taken into custody as a person of interest in the case and is currently being held by immigration authorities.

Information he provided to detectives led them to Zina's body in a rural area near Eatonville, Wash. on Thursday. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Ramsdell said police and FBI agents are looking into whether Adhahn may be connected to other crimes locally and around the country.

Asked if Adhahn could be involved in the death of Adre'anna Jackson, Ramsdell said, "that is a possibility."

Jackson's body was found in a Pierce County field April 4, 2006. The 10-year-old Tillicum girl disappeared on her way to school in December, 2005.

"We are looking at cold cases from the past, and old cases that may be of similar nature," Ramsdell said.

Adhahn, a level-one sex offender, was detained after police raided a Parkland home on Monday, where they found girl's undergarments.

Police also seized a grey van that matched the general description given to police by Zina's father, Mikhail Linnik, who heard his daughter scream and saw the van drive off the night she disappeared.

He initially denied any involvement in Zina's disappearance and said he was not in Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood July 4, Detective L.J. Wade wrote in an affidavit filed in Pierce County Superior Court in support of the search warrant application.

Adhahn, who is originally from Thailand, was accused of rape in 1990 in Pierce County and pleaded guilty to incest.

David Gomez, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Seattle division, said that the bureau will continue to assist with the investigation into Adhahn and whether he may be connected to other crimes.

"The similarities in the manner in which Zina was abducted would be compared with other cases nationwide," he said.

Some of the other local cases being reviewed include:

- Michella Welch, 12, of Tacoma, whose body was found hours after the girl disappeared from Puget Park on March 26, 1986.

- Jennifer Bastian, 13, of Tacoma, who was found dead Aug. 28, 1986, in Point Defiance Park, where she'd been last seen riding her bicycle two weeks earlier.

- Lenoria Jones, 4, of Tacoma, who disappeared July 20, 1995.

"We'll have to go back and review those cases," Ramsdell said. "Obviously some of those cases are very old."

Detectives also are looking into Adhahn's military background to see where he served and whether he might be connected to other cases of missing or murdered children.

Gomez said the FBI is helping Tacoma police detectives search the scene where Zina's body was found, and will provide assistance with forensic analysis.

"It's always tough when you have the death of a child," Gomez said. "They're never easy."

“”The Linnik family is currently in our thoughts and prayers as they begin healing from this horrific event.”

OMG! What a horrifically PC statement. What a hurtful piece of nonsense...begin healing? What healing?

The pain of knowing their child was murdered and probably raped is just starting.

Thank You.

It was a terribly stupid thing to say - and from a police official no less? How many “healed “ families of murdered children does he know? Probably none.

People who lose their children never “heal”- they only learn to bury the pain so deep they can function while no one else around them realizes what they are suffering.

I wonder if he was ever over here in the Tri-Cities?

Four Year Old Search for Sofia Juarez Still Active

KNDU-TV
2/23/07

KENNEWICK, WA. -- On February 4, 2003, four year old Sofia Juarez walked out of her home with a dollar bill in her hand to go to the grocery store with her grandmother's boyfriend, and then vanished. Her fifth birthday was the next day, but she never had her party, because she disappeared. This resulted in one of the biggest searches in Tri Cities history with every local law enforcement agency, fire department, the F.B.I., the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and hundreds of volunteers.

Detectives still don't have any idea what really happened to her, but it isn't for a lack of effort. They've checked into thousands of leads and filed thousands of reports over the last four years and they're frustrated they haven't been able to find this little girl.

Sergeant Randy Maynard was on duty the night Sofia disappeared and has been associated with the case ever since. One tip he says they've gotten several times over the last couple of years is that Sofia was hit by a car in front of her house, picked up by the driver and buried somewhere on Jump Off Joe Butte.

"There was even a further twist where her remains were excavated from that site on Jump Off Joe Butte and taken to Prosser, and buried out on a farm in Prosser which led us to the search there a year ago June," said Sgt. Maynard.

But like all of the other leads, no sign of Sofia.

Then in August of 2006, a skull of a child was found north of Connell.

Initial tests were inconclusive, so now it's being examined at the F.B.I. Missing Children Unit in Virginia.

Detective Craig Hanson has been involved with the Sofia case since the beginning. He's been the lead detective on the case since May of 2005, the third lead detective. He's investigated more than 150-tips just since he's taken over, but again, nothing's panned out.

"It's been very frustrating. One, we don't know originally what happened to Sofia. We've have various accounts coming through the last nearly four years of what's happened to her. They've ranged from familial abductions to stranger abductions and so on," said Det. Hanson.

Detective Hanson talks to Sofia's mother frequently and follows every single lead, with the hope that one of them will help them figure out what happened to Sofia Juarez.

"The Department here is committed to find her one way or another. Whether it happens today or 20-years from now during my retirement party, we want to find her," said Hanson.

When both Maynard and Hanson were asked if they think there's a chance Sofia is still alive, they said they hope so, but they know that after this much time, the odds don't look good.

The F.B.I. has a new agent in town who's been assigned the Sofia Juarez case. She's currently reviewing the case, which remains very active.

Many people are still holding out hope this little girl will be found alive and returned to her mother.

Thanks for the ping, Sionsar.

The “updated” KIRO 7 story drops the Tacoma Police Chief’s dumb, PC “healing” quote, and adds this:\

“He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree incest in exchange for completing 60 months of sexual-deviancy counseling.”

Yep, counseling really works well.

As for me, since this cop is not the enemy, the murderer is, I'd cut him some slack. When there is NO right thing to say that will fix a situation, I tend to have a lot of sympathy for those who must try to say something in an attempt to comfort this family. The cop has done the only job he can do... he's got the guy behind bars.

Agreed. You need to understand the thoroughly PC environment of the Pacific Northwest to understand comments like this.

God help me: Did I actually just say that??? Maybe it's time to Get Out!)

Well maybe I’ve been here too long too, if it’s wicked and hurtful for a man to say a family is in our thoughts and prayers with a hope that they will heal.

Maybe we should just tell them the rest of their life will be emptiness and heartbreak. That’d be better.

Yep, counseling really works well.

To take a contrarian position: Counseling isn't 100%. Never has been, though I can't speak for the future. I have a relative who has been in AA for a couple of decades and is doing fine despite a few significant and ongoing stresses. But we often hear of AA failures. Does that make AA worthless? I think not.

Now I have no numbers relating to "sexual-deviancy counseling," but I wouldn't dismiss the entire program based on a single failure, any more than I'd dismiss "drivers' ed" programs based on the number of teenagers around here who die in high-speed automobile impact with trees. (And we have LOTS of big, solid trees here!)

The comment was to Opus, not you. I lost a child once; I know this territory -- Opus is right in that it is probably (depending upon their faith) too soon for the family to set their lifelong direction. I have seen people/families go in both directions, sinking into bitterness and revenge or working towards healing.

At this early stage the official's comment is fatuous, ignorant, empty and presumptuous (though I'd like to think "hopeful"). The family isn't anywhere near "healing," they're just beginning to grasp the enormity of what has happened. It is going to take time, and a lot of it.

HOTD (and Opus), keep this family in your prayers. They've got some really hard times ahead.

Given the players here, and the gravity of the wrongdoing done here, I think the cop is the least deserving of our scorn.

I simply do not understand how incest can be a lesser charge than rape.

Merriam-Webster online:

incest : sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry; also : the statutory crime of such a relationship

rape : unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent
