95-year old letter settles Titanic controversy of the aristocrats who 'abandoned' survivors

They survived the Titanic disaster only to have their lives blighted by questions over their integrity on the night the White Star liner slipped beneath the waves.

Old Etonian Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon and his socialite wife, Lady Lucy "Lucile" Duff-Gordon, escaped into the darkness in an emergency lifeboat less than half full.

Sir Cosmo never lived down the stigma of accusations that he bribed crewmen to secure the escape in a boat which could have held 28 more people and and did not return to try to pick up survivors crying out in the icy sea.

Now, after 95 years, a letter from Lady Duff-Gordon's secretary has surfaced to shed new light on one of the most controversial episodes in the sinking.

Mabel says newspaper reports about Lady Duff-Gordon were "quite untrue, for she has not seen one reporter, her lawyer strictly forbidden it, so everything about her is a concocted tale.

Nice to see the media hasn't changed much.

This is why people should never get their history lessons from Hollywood. James Cameron turned the tragedy of the Titanic into a rich vs. poor class struggle with the evil capitalists exploiting the virtuous underpriviliged.

In reality, many of the “evil capitalists” on the Titanic were the most heroic. But that doesn’t play today...

True, envy is rampant in this country, in large part to public education (brainwashing), leftists media, and the Rat party. The left doesn't recognize a person as an individual. BTW, I love your tagline, it cracked me up :)

"It was also revealed that Leading Fireman Charles Hendrickson asked those in the lifeboat whether they should return to pick up survivors - but Lady Duff-Gordon warned they might be swamped by people clambering onto the small boat. Several of the men, too, agreed it was too dangerous"

I valid concern since most of the passengers were women.

That makes me glad I never watched Cameron’s version of Titanic.

It was horrendous and heavy handed, except for the special effects.

Actually my husband has expressed interest in seeing the special effects since he is a super-detail modeler and we understand the model of the Titanic was quite impressive. I just have never cared to watch it for the plot. Thanks for the feedback.

Horrendous is the right word for it.

The girl’s character was rude and self-centered.

DiCaprio just looked like he needed a bath... he was repulsive.

The special effects were excellent, however.

So turning off the sound and enjoying the technical wizardry is the way to go, eh?

Don’t feel bad, haven’t seen it either. I was subjected to repeated assaults of that one song from the movie however.

You’re welcome. One could watch the beginning minutes of people boarding, and fast forward through scenes with the rich girl slumming it. The sinking is very good. I guess I was spoiled because I have read about it, and have scene earlier film(s) (1953 Barbara Stanwyck) which didn’t preach anti-capitalist hate.
