WORD FOR THE DAY, TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 2007, BASTION
Merriam-Webster

Tusday, April 24, 2005, BASTION

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

BASTION

noun
pronunciation: Bas-‘chun
etymology: [Origin: 1590–1600; < MF < It bastione, equiv. to Upper It bastí(a) bastion, orig., fortified, built (c. It bastita, ptp. of bastire to build < Gmc; see BASTE1) + -one aug. suffix ]

1. Fortification. a projecting portion of a rampart or fortification that forms an irregular pentagon attached at the base to the main work.
2. a fortified place.
3. anything seen as preserving or protecting some quality, condition, etc.: a bastion of solitude; a bastion of democracy.

bastioned, adjective

Let's all be nice with this word. I know where it can go. I'm watching. But later on this morning.

And #1, is “loose.” I’m sorry, you seem to have failed to have poor grammar. We’ll have to accept you here among the verbivores.

1. lose
2. huge
3. series (on FR - serious elsewhere)

The correct answers are:
1. loose
2. hugh
3. series

But, in the interest of fairness, you were not given an opportunity to answer the bonus question:

Other than cheese, what is a moose's favorite thing to bite? And where would such a bite most likely take place?

My sister (even though I don’t have one)

And I have to confess, I know not where the bite would be placed. :-P

Star, I’ve added you to the roll. You’ll have to be on your best behavior during the probationary period. Be sure to observe Robert as an example of how not to behave in class. Liberty, even though you didn’t specifically request a ping I’ve added you to the roll because you seem to fit in here already.

Subbies, it looks like we’ve had some transfer students join the class today. Make sure you add them to the official class roll.

I apparently misspelled your screenname on my previous post (or somebody else has a screenname curiously like yours).

Home from work, cooking beef barley soup and I’ve got a ;oaf of rye bread rising in the oven-it is 71 and rain is predicted all night ahead of yet another cold front-I guess I shouldn’t have cleaned out the fireplace and wood stove over the weekend-

I realize Rudy is from New York-
A bastion of liberal thinking
But when he changes his spots
I really wonder what he is drinking

In California he’s for marriage
Between homosexual lovers
But in red states he says
Only heterosexuals under the covers

Likewise is he on abortion
His view depends on the place-
Maybe he’s schizophrenic
Or afraid of loosing the race

There is some rough weather out there today and predicted into tonight, too-but spring weather is never tranquil in Texas...

I’m sure Chanel will do just fine-Husky girl absolutely hated the conehead thing-she shook it, bit it and whined the whole time she had to wear it-I felt so badly for her.

Tornados don’t form well with all the high hills up here, thank God but the wind swoops down from the hills and blows up from the water nastily, and the hail is deafening on this bluff-I will not be unhappy to move into the shelter of the big trees on the cove 1/4 mile up the road. I can hear the thunder from west now, so it looks like we may be in for a wild few hours.
