Dictionaries on line | Slip 18

April 10, 2007, Tuesday, DESICCATE

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today. Tomorrow I’m bringing in chains, so beware.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

DESICCATE

Pronunciation: 'de-si-"kAt
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -cat•ed; -cat•ing Etymology: Latin desiccatus, past participle of desiccare to dry up, from de- + siccare to dry, from siccus dry -- more at SACK
transitive verb

1 : to dry up
2 : to preserve (a food) by drying : DEHYDRATE
3 : to drain of emotional or intellectual vitality
intransitive verb : to become dried up

My brain is desiccated from learning how to use this computer! If I've made errors, please forgive me.

Simba the filthy cat is so happy about this new computer. It's half the size of my Compaq 98 CPU. He can't hit my "escape" key now, gulp, I hope.

I learned how to turn the TV on. This thing actually has a TV channel gadget. One button turns it on to FNN. I haven't tried it yet. I'm afeared.

Don’t be afeared push the button
what in the world can happen
remember escape is the doorway out
and any computer understands the command,
on power, off power
then you can expect nasty messages about not
shutting down properly. ;)

Do you remember when those pouches were in potato chip bags? Or am I showing my age?

A++++ for you. Sorry for being late on your grade. Just learning here.

No more teacher strikes for 5 years. Both sides agreed to accept what was a non-binding “fact finding” recommendation.

I imagine because of my misadventures in the past, Dave figured I misspelled. I’ve done it before. I was surprised it didn’t have two s’s. Words are vunderbar. Is that how you spell it in German?

I received nasty error messages this morning, but I didn't want to wake up Cyber.

I had a file in my old 98 that was "Words for the Day." It goes back to when I first started doing this. Cyber did not take it from my old computer, but it was here last night. I still have a Ghost in the Machine.

I have to take baby steps with computers. The "refresh" key is in a different place as well as many others. I have to hover over them to figure out what the heck they are. LOL! But I don't have to have a pad down for the mouse. Everything is laser optical wireless.

Would that Mrs Clinton’s campaign funding would dry up.... Butt her pant suites don’t dressicate, , merely keep getting larger.

(When was the last time she wore a dress?)

The real question is, how many have tried to eat them twice?

And now onto the burning question of the day for the news broadcasters-who is the real father on Anna Nicole Smith's baby?

It ain't Don Imus!

Haven't you ever noticed her legs and thighs? Colonel Sanders could make a living off of her.

A++++ for you, Cook!

A little poetry for the day.

The Poet And The Bird
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Said a people to a poet-—” Go out from among us straightway!
While we are thinking earthly things, thou singest of divine.
There’s a little fair brown nightingale, who, sitting in the gateways
Makes fitter music to our ears than any song of thine!”

The poet went out weeping-—the nightingale ceased chanting;
“Now, wherefore, O thou nightingale, is all thy sweetness done?”
I cannot sing my earthly things, the heavenly poet wanting,
Whose highest harmony includes the lowest under sun.”

The poet went out weeping,-—and died abroad, bereft there-—
The bird flew to his grave and died, amid a thousand wails:-—
And, when I last came by the place, I swear the music left there
Was only of the poet’s song, and not the nightingale’s.

The only kind of “bean” soup I was exposed to as a kid was split pea and lentil soups, and to this day I despise both. Any other kind of beans, I love.

I have to tone it down now though, Jax is on a “I don’t like spicy” kick.....which I found to be hilarious over the weekend as she was dipping chicken nuggets (homemade, baked not fast food) in a honey mustard sauce hubby made using chinese mustard.

I'm so uptown right now, I don't know what to do. These Vista computers only came out about a month ago. There are stickers on computer programs that say "Vista compatible." They aren't.

It took Cyber three hours to put in a great firewall. He was on the phone and on the computer at the same time. This particular firewall didn't have a phone number because people have complained about understanding the offshore technicians. They write as poorly as they speak. I think we may have bought it too early, but I'm learning and so is Cyber.
