AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) -- Longtime Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry announced his retirement Friday after 27 years with the Falcons, the last 23 as head coach.
He guided the Falcons to three conference championships but his tenure ended with three consecutive losing seasons, the first such skid in his tenure at the school.
In a prepared statement, the 68-year-old DeBerry called his resignation "the hardest decision I've ever made in my life."

More College Football news.
You're a New Mexico Lobos fan, eh? May I ask what the chances are of Amadeus Waters starting at running back next year?
Wow! That's a stunner! A talented close friend of our daughter is a freshman football player there this year. I wonder how he'll be impacted by this announcement. He was considering a transfer at one point, but I think he decided to wait the year out. Wondering what he'll do now...
Even though it's harder to win at the academies, I know coach's jobs can often ride on winning against the other services. Army and Navy can be like Auburn-Alabama with the Generals and Admirals being the bigshot alumns who can make or break a coach. With Navy being on the upswing and the AFA sliding the last few years, it's possible this wasn't voluntary.
"May I ask what the chances are of Amadeus Waters starting at running back next year?"
He should see some playing time, but Rodney Ferguson came on strong at the end of the season. He ended up with over 1100 yards, and became a bruising runner between the tackles. Ferguson will only be a Junior next season.
Thanks. The reason I asked is because he's from the area I'm from and went to high school at the same high school I went to.
It was reported yesterday that Waters has asked to be released from his scholarship so that he could transfer. He was granted his request. His family was pretty upset that he was redshirted this past season, and they have said some pretty nasty things about the Lobo program and Albuquerque. His uncle was upset because the Lobo's starting RB this season is a New Mexico native, and his experience playing High school ball in NM doesn't come close to Waters' experience since he played HS ball in Tx.
Waters' uncle and brother have been posting on TheRedMenace.com since Amadeus commited to UNM.
I think this is a case of a kid's family giving him crappy advice. I hope they know what they are doing. Waters had a good shot at real playing time next season, now he will have to sit out a year.
He won't have to sit out neaxt year if he goes to 1AA, I believe. If what you're saying is true, he may be headed to Texas State, which is just down the road.
