True story:

A car driving in front of me hit a turkey that was trying to fly over the road and it was still alive as I stopped to pick it up. I stopped it's suffering and threw it in the back of my Jeep and that evening dropped it off at a restaurant/bar I knew.

The owner is a great wild game cook and I knew he'd do a good job. I stopped in later that night for some fresh turkey and it was delicious. Beer and blackberry brandy to compliment it. It was much easier to eat than road-killed venison because there was no plastic grill parts or headlight glass to watch out for. Or #4 shot, for that matter.

You're lucky you didn't get caught. My uncle spent his wedding night in jail, cuz at his reception, he served venison that could not have been taken in season. Inviting the local Constable turned out to be a bad decision. :o)
