U.S. pastor says guilty of sexual immorality [Haggard finally admits it]

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - Disgraced U.S. evangelist Ted Haggard, a vocal opponent of gay marriage, said on Sunday that he was guilty of "sexual immorality" and that he had long battled with a "repulsive" side of his life.

"I am guilty of sexual immorality, I am a deceiver and a liar. There is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark and I've been warring against it my entire adult life", Haggard said in a letter that was read to his New Life Church in Colorado Springs by a church overseer.

"Frankly, I'd never heard of the idiot until the left started pointing fingers and yelling about it."

Well, you'd have a point, except that lots of people had heard of the man, and he was a man of large influence among evangelicals. He even spoke frequently to President Bush.

Here's the problem: Recently, there was a news story that basically said that the White House had a low opinion of evangelicals. You may remember that story.

Guys like Haggard are one of the reasons many people have a low opinion of evangelicals in general. They're wrong to think that way, because the actions of one, or a few, idiots shouldn't influence people's opinions. Yet they often do.

So, when a prominent evangelical leader, whether you have heard of him or not, falls in this spectacular a way, it does influence people's opinions of evangelicals in general. It's not right, but it's a fact.

I can tell you right now that there are a bunch of folks running mega-churches who are sweating this weekend over this. They may be perfectly legitimate, but they're going to get a close look from their congregations this week.

The next time they fly off to Aspen over the Christmas holiday, instead of being in church holding services, leaving their underlings to hold the Christmas service, their congregation's going to start wondering.

Whether the story about the Bush Administration's scorn of the evangelicals is true or not, lots of people are going to be questioning that this week.

Yes the fall of a leader like Haggard is a blow to all evangelicals. It shouldn't be, but it is.

After I posted my questions to you I did a search. Apparently he adopted that false persona as a clever marketing ploy. Didn't mind people laughing at him as long as his name was getting out there. Retail sales for his product are in the $600million neighborhood.

Took his time about it, though, didn't he?

You would expect perfect timing from an imperfect person?

Nope. Of course not. I certainly would not expect it from someone who has been lying to his family and his congregation all this time.

Haggard is a creep. No, I wouldn't expect him to do anything else.

Rent "Elmer Gantry" from NetFlix. It's a perfect explanation of how this happens.

I wonder how this went over with the kids in the congregation.

A very good question. There are lots of parents who are having to explain things they do not want to have to explain to their kids. It's especially difficult for them if the kids are adolescents.

Teenagers in church tend to be very intense about their feelings, and often revere their pastors. It will be a difficult, difficult day for their parents.

Shame on Haggard!

I guess there are people stupid enough to vote based on the actions of one person, but I really don't see very many people swaying because of this situation.

I've read a lot of bashing of democrats because the ex-prostitute admitted that he timed his disclosure perfectly, but wouldn't the republicans do the same?

Let's not confuse the importance of this -- some ignorant and some die-hard party members might see this as a party issue, but it's not.

Haggard completed defiled the mandates given to elders in the scripture, and knowing he was, refused to step down. He has dishonored the Lord Jesus Christ, his wife and his children. The scripture is clear about confessing your sins to one another that you may be healed. Yes, we do sin, but Jesus also warned that those who claim to be teachers bring a harsher judgment upon themselves. Let's not get all "I'm okay, you're okay" about this. The lesson to be learned here is that your sin will find you out. God chastises those who claim to be His. It's all there in the scripture.

And, let's not get all fired up about those lousy democrats -- again, republicans would do the same. Haggard should have been living his life in such a manner that they couldn't have dragged him through the mud. He brought this on himself. He deserves every bit of the mocking from the democrats.

And, BTW, he is definitely "tied" to Bush, whatever spin you may hear from the WH.

And what does that have to do with anything? Guilt by association? How the hell is the President supposed to have known what this guy was up to in his private life? Should he be a mind reader?

What a disgraced Faggot. He ought to go slit his wrists or something. What a disgrace. He is a disgrace to his wife and his poor children I will say a prayer for the Wife and his children.

I am sad today for Ted Haggard, that he has been in a living hell for a long time. But happy that his day of reckoning is here, a la, no more compulsively continuing in Christian leadership when he should have resigned a long time ago. I hope and pray he finds deliverance and a new honest life.

I pray for his wife and kids too.

Regretful that it had to become a huge scandal.

If you excuse me for interrupting, I hear you. I have a bright daughter who is a spokesperson for a deciever and a con man who leads a "church" in Oregon. It is a very disheartening situation.

In the same breath, I know many good pastors and I have faith in the goodness of people.

What scares me is that my own basic trusting nature has rubbed off on my daughter and that she was sucked into a whirlpool of deception along with her husband.

The ministry requires respondible and credible leadership. At all times.

Period.

To add to what you said-

I hope this is a reality check for the congregation of this church who obviously were more caught up in the MAN instead of the message.

I am greatly saddened by this story. I have no idea who this person is, but it is indeed a sad day when someone who "represents" a large Christian group is found to be a fraud and hypocrite.
