THE executive producer of the BBC's Planet Earth series has branded the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin a "showman" more interested in his own stardom than the animal kingdom.
Alastair Fothergill launched an extraordinary attack on the Australian TV star who was killed by a stingray while making a wildlife program in September.
"What Steve Irwin did for a living was as different from what we do as it's possible to get," he told the Radio Times.
"Let's face it, Steve was a showman. Yes, he introduced a lot of people to natural history, but his basic stock in trade was, 'Aren't I brave, and aren't animals dangerous?' The fact is, I'm not interested in human stars. I'm only interested in animal stars."

Alastair who? Aren't you sick of these BBC wankers who sip chardonnay discussing whether they prefer Trotsky to Lenin. This is the crap you get when government gets involved with media ownership. Note that class like Sir richard Attenborough rises above the crap.

And what is *wrong* with being a showman?
I guess, for a lot of these ecofascists just being any man is *wrong*.

I'm only interested in animal stars So Alastair how do you propose to make animals into stars? Hiding in a Zoo and filming them doing what they do, or going into the wild and seeing what they do.

It's the age-old story of the purists versus the popularizers. The purists always hate the popularizers for compromising purity to reach the masses, forgetting that the masses are their reason for existence. Oh, wait, come to think of it, who is Alastair Fothergill? No Jane Goodall, that's for sure.
Seriously, though... Irwin is like the old-time zoos, which made people interested in wildlife and exotic environments, but which are now detested by some extremists as "exploiting animals." I've been to some of the PC zoos, and the big problem is... you can't see the animals! They seem to think zoos are some sort of Section 8 Housing program for endangered wildlife!

What Professor Feathergirl is saying is that BBC can produce boring crap because taxpayers subsidize them whereas Irwin needed to produce interesting, compelling programing that is commercially successful.
