Need help with Firewire

I need to transfer all my stuff from my Mac Mini to another, newer Mini so that I can pass mine on to a friend. My son, who knows how to do these things, lives in Hawaii and just had his cell phone stolen, so I can't go to him for help. I know to buy a Firewire cable, and I will do so today. Can anyone tell me what are the steps to do this? I just switched to Mac last year, so go slow with me. :D Feel free to PM me if you'd rather, or we can take it to email. Thanks in advance for any help.

Connect the two machines using the firewire cable. On the second machine, power it up while holding down the 'T' key. That machine will start up in target disk mode. You can tell by the firewire symbols that will be displayed on the screen of the second machine

Now go to the finder and locate the disk drive from the second machine (from the first machine) and open the files and copy away
