I think they were away the day before. That was the day he got the stationary, pen and scoped out the house. I don't think there was snow on the ground the day before....and you know what.....We're lousy observers.
It's "noise" which awakens our instincts. Besides, during the holidays, things get moved all over the place.....and they have a housekeeper.
