It may be that the sectarian vendetta Zarqawi set in motion has already gone too far to be extinguished soon. But Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki has taken the right steps to begin tamping down an incipient civil war. His release of hundreds of mostly Sunni Arab detainees who do not have blood on their hands and his appointment of defense and interior ministers reputed to be free of sectarian or militia allegiances suggest a sage realization of his government's need to reconcile Sunnis and Shi'ites..."
