I've searched extensively online for a new ISP. No luck. I think I'll have better luck with recommendations from my FReeper FRiends. Requirements: 1) It must be cheap. No more than $140-$180 a year ($15 a month max) or not much higher. 2)It must be faster than 46.6 kbps. (That's the fastest speed I can log on at now.) Would prefer 50.6 kbps or higher. Thank you for any recommendations.
Verizon runs me $15.95 a month and I haven't had any problems with it. It's DSL, so high speed. Not the highest available, but certainly fast enough for me.
Walmart Connect worked for me when I was on business. If it is still around, go to Walmart and pick up a free disk.
I always got a good connection.
(This was before I upgraded to cable modem)
That's interesting. I have Verizon cell phone service now. I didn't know they offer ISP service. Thanks.
I usually can get at least 49.2 on the connection. Sometimes I can get 50.6 although you'd never know the difference.
I pay $15.95/month.
You might check Netzero.com. Their dialup is under 10 bucks but I don't know anything about their reliability, speed, etc.
Thanks for the recommendations. I just got the renewal notice for my current ISP, and I definitely need a change, as their customer service is seriously lacking.
I don't have satellite, but I would like to. A package deal would be worth looking into.
The telephone lines in your neighborhood are what determines the speed you connect at. All ISP's now use
V.90 or V.92 modems, which are rated at "56k".
If you want any faster you will have to go DSL or cable.
OK. I just called Verizon. They said they offer broadband, and said you need to insert an Aircard into the side of your computer. Is that what you have? I don't seem to have a slot for a card on my computer; just a DVD compartment.
Thanks. I didn't know that.
No. You don't need an Aircard - I'm not sure what that is unless you're going wireless internet which is what it sounds like.
Ask for straight up DSL service - they'll send you a DSL modem which you plug into your phone jack for the transmission. A modem cable is provided for the connection to the computer.
I'm not going wireless. I just happened to call Verizon Wireless' number. They gave me a couple of other numbers, which I am going to call right now.
Bah, they're closed.
Log on to the Verizon/DSL. There will be a box for you to
enter your phone #. They will run a check to see if you
are in an area that has DSL.
They will instruct you what to do next. You will have to sign
a years contract, and you will be sent a modem box and disc.
Itsa pretty easy, but you have to give credit card # for
modem box.
Forgot to mention, Verizon DSL is the best ISP I've had.
Tons better than Comcast Cable.
I doubt you could really tell the difference between 46.6 and 50.6K
