NEW YORK (AP) - The Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines apologized for disrespecting President Bush during a London concert in 2003. But now, she's taking it back. "I don't feel that way anymore," she told Time magazine for its issue hitting newsstands Monday. "I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever."
As war in Iraq loomed, Maines told the London audience: "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."
The remarks led to death threats and a backlash from other country stars, including a high-profile spat with Toby Keith. It also stalled what until then had been the group's smashingly successful career.
Bandmate Emily Robinson said she knew right away the remark wouldn't be taken lightly and got "hot from my head to my toes."
"It wasn't that I didn't agree with her 100 percent; it was just, 'Oh, this is going to stir something up,'" she told Time.
For band member Martie Maguire, the controversy was a blessing in disguise.
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
The Chicks' hits include "Landslide,""Goodbye Earl" and "Wide Open Spaces." Their new album, "Taking the Long Way," is due out May 23. The first single is "Not Ready to Make Nice.
scullery maid
Don't want "those " kind of fans? these "chicks" are more stupid than I thought!
shoot your mouth off and pay the consequences...maybe they can be opening act for springsteen or Barbara stresiand. ha.
Of course, the liberal media will never blame them for why the US is disliked in the rest of the world.
Translation: "I'd rather have a small crowd of syncophants who agree with everything I say and worship me unquestioningly for the rest of my life than have my music occasionally enjoyed by people who have the nerve to disagree with me and who listen to other artists who disagree with me."
Yuck. I can't stand even looking at Natalie Maines' face. It's not that she is unattractive, she just looks selfish and self-centered. (Don't ask me to explain that, lol, because I can't.)
Well fat Nan, we are too cool for you. I understand ticket sales for your concert tour are selling to only a SMALL number of people so far. You will be playing at local bars in the future.
I enjoy the fact that they're basically trying to cherry coat the fact that they basically sabatouged their careers because the chunky lead singer couldn't keep her trap shut...
Does anyone know how much play their single has gotten? I've heard it on the radio, but it certainly hasn't gotten the same play as Rascall Flatt's new CD or the new Sugarland/ Bon Jovi single.
Sounds as if she's playing for the Berkley, U. of Wisconsin crowd. Do they buy that many CD's?
I bet the first was UGH!
I'd get banned for the later versions...
"The remarks led to death threats and a backlash from other country stars, including a high profile spat with Toby Keith."
I don't know about the rest, but the statement about the spat with Toby Keith is untrue. What led to the high profile spat with Toby Keith was Natalie bashing Toby's song "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue", and bashing people like me who enjoy the song. This took place a year before Natatlie's Bush bashing remarks. This so-called news reporter either doesn't know the timeline or doesn't care about getting the facts out.
Regarding the other Chick Martie's bashing of Reba McEntire and Toby Keith's fans, I am a fan of both but I don't have a 5 disk CD changer in my little old Mazda pickup. But i also don't listen to the white trash Dixie Chicks anymore.
One article posted here last week said it's not getting that much play, especially on C/W stations. It said that every time they play it, they get angry calls, so a lot of stations just put it on the shelf.
Did you hear the part where she called their fans either hicks or rednecks, I don't recall which? That'll help...not!
They all download their songs from the Internet for free.
I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it,
Well, You got it!!!!
That's not far off the mark at all.
She's not even smart enough to dig herself out.
She likes the dirt on her pig ass self.
