BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhuanet)-- Tom Cruise boasted about eating fiancèe Katie Holmes's placenta when baby Cruise is born, Cruise said in an interview.

The Mission: Impossible III actor, 43, said: "I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I am gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there"

But when it was pointed out it would be a very big meal, he retorted: "OK. Maybe I won't."

Though some claim that eating afterbirth may help prevent post-partum depression, it won't help the mom if dad eats it.

Placentophagia, eating the placenta, is practised in many cultures, but it is less common in western society. In 1998 a British TV chef fried a placenta and served it to his guests.

The baby, rumored to be a girl, is due any day and the couple plan to wed in the summer. They have been engaged since last June.

With the little one expected soon, speculations surrounding Katie Holmes' childbirth have been flying high.

Cruise and Holmes are professed followers of the Church of Scientology, which stipulates "silent birth".

Last week Cruise told US chat show host Diane Sawyer that 27-year-old Holmes, in the final stages of her pregnancy with their first child, will practice "quiet birth."

Cruise explained that "quiet birth," which aims to minimize talk and other noise inside the delivery room," is "basically just respecting the mother."

"She does what she's gotta do," he explained,  addressing speculation that such a practice would deny her pain medication. "If she needs medicine, she needs medicine."

According to the tenets of Scientology, words spoken during birth and other painful times may traumatize the infant.

"It's all about no talking, no unnecessary talking during the delivery -- and that way the mother is calm and she's got a lot of work to do, but there's no problem with her making noise. It's just no spoken words," said Pat Felske, a spokesperson for the Church of Scientology of Toronto, who has had four children with the silent birth method.

As medical staff are also instructed not to speak, they must communicate using gestures and hand signals.Enditem

Cruise was only kidding
News sites take placenta-eating comment out of context and report it as fact

canada.com Published: Tuesday, April 18, 2006

The Web is buzzing with the shocking “news” that Tom Cruise plans to eat the placenta after his girlfriend Katie Holmes gives birth.

Cruise’s comment – a joke he made during an interview with GQ – is being taken out of context and reported as legitimate news. Some sites are going so far as to quote medical experts on the topic of placenta-eating.

Cruise, 43, told GQ: "I'm gonna eat the placenta. I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I'm gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there." When it was pointed out that it would be a big meal, Cruise replied: "OK, maybe I won't."

Asked about the comments by ABC's Diane Sawyer, the star replied: "Yeah, we're going to do that - a whole family thing. Isn't that normal and natural? No, we're not eating it."

But most sites aren’t making note of the fact that Cruise was kidding.

“Tom Cruise is reportedly planning to eat the placenta and umbilical cord after fiancée Katie Holmes gives birth to their child,” reports mtv.uk.

iAfrica.com declares: “Tom Cruise is intending to eat Katie Holmes' placenta after his fiancée has given birth to their baby.”

“Hollywood actor and Scientologist Tom Cruise is planning to eat Katie Holmes' placenta,” reports Ireland’s rte.ie.

Britain’s itv.com says: "Sofa leaping father-to-be Tom Cruise has revealed his latest bizarre plan - to eat Katie Holmes' placenta.”

At least one online news source “gets” it. At the Info About News site, the placenta remark merits only a passing mention deep down in a story about Cruise.

“Oh, and he made a pretty nifty joke about eating the placenta,” reads the site. “Really, it was funny.”

????? all this stuff about the quietness, for the baby....what about the feelings of his exwife and children ??? there surely is no silence about him, or his love-lust life , I think the whole thing is sick! would she be all smiles and lovey dovey if he were a construction worker, a mine worker, a car mechanic, etc, when she wouldn't have the money for all her baby furnishings, and had to go to Goodwill to get a crib? Niave and stupid if you ask me.

When I have several hours of minmdless work to do, my mind often - OK, always - goes off on its own to ponder things that I don't guess most people think about. Or, at least, don't admit that they think about.

The other day it occurred to me that if a person has a friend or loved one who is prone to get hooked up with a false religion, it would be best to encourage that person to go for Scientology. I figure that when the day comes for that person to have to account for themselves before God and they start explaining Scientology to Him, He'll be laughing so hard that He might just forget to punish them for it.

Oh, for the 'Good Old Days' when we thought that Eric Estrada was "weird" for keeping a piece of his baby's umbilical cord in a vial around his neck!

Who's got that Poncho, "You're a Homo!" gif? :)

Whether this is true or not, Cruise is whacked. He will be found naked, mumbling and wandering the streets of Hollyweird one of these years.
