Shetland's past comes to life amid the ruins
The Scotsman ^ | Tuesday, 18th April 2006 | Caroline Wickham-Jones

The people of Jarlshof threw garbage into dumps from before 2500 BC but, although their waste was unwanted, their refuse has been anything but rubbish for archaeologists investigating their lives. We know that the Stone Age settlers lived in small circular stone houses, that they tilled crops, kept cattle and sheep, and harvested the sea for fish and whales, seals and shellfish. They also made tools - some finely decorated - from stone, pottery and bone... In the 19th century the site was visited by Sir Walter Scott who christened the ruined hall "Jarlshof", and the name has stuck since. Sir Walter had no idea that these graves lay below the ruins he named; at the time the site remained a solitary building until the storms started to reveal the wealth of human history that lay beneath them, yet he was inspired to base part of his novel The Pirate here above their tombs.

Archaeologists began excavating the site at Jarlshof before the Second World War and found evidence of settlement for 4,200 years. The earliest pottery found on site has been dated to 2500 BC, but more amazing discoveries may lie beneath the buildings already recovered from the earth.

The complete story talks of the coming of the Vikings.

"What happened to the previous inhabitants we do not know but recent research suggests that many of the Norse incomers took local wives."

This is unlikely. Agriculture was the work of slaves from the beginning until very recently. Saint Patrick was captured on an Irish slave raid and was captive for ten or twenty years. The Roman economy was based on captured slave labor. The "cattle raids" so talked about in the old chronicles were slave raids as well. Serfdom lasted into modern times. Slavery was considered as normal as eating breakfast pretty much everywhere until the 19th Century.

What happened to the aboriginal people when the Vikings took over? They were made slaves, of course. That is they were made slaves if they were cooperative, productive, and cheerful and especially if they were young and pretty.

Dead link, reprised from another topic:
Did the Vikings drive natives from the isles?
by Stephen Stewart
May 17 2005
Viking settlers may have "ethnically cleansed" Scotland's islands, waging a genocidal campaign against native Pictish tribes as they arrived, according to evidence uncovered by archaeologists... Work at Langskaill farm, in Westray, shows signs of a Pictish culture vanish abruptly with the arrival of the Scandinavians, underlining the theory that the Northern Isles were taken violently... A Viking-Norse longhouse was unearthed, which was built directly over an earlier earth house and part of a Pictish house, probably indicating a takeover of the site and adjoining lands... In recent years, the image of the Vikings has been transformed from bloodthirsty pagan savages to that of sophisticated merchants with exceptional navigational and engineering skills. The finds on Orkney, however, are expected to reopen the entire debate.
