I've been using alcohol to clean all my electronics since I took a VCR in years ago and they charged more to clean it than it would cost for a new one. Figure if it ruins it I can use the money saved to replace it.
If you have a kid wash it you can always say they didn't know any better if it doesn't work....

Computer guys at the hospitals I supported used to toss the CRT keboards in the dishwashers in the hospital kitchen. Those things were built like trucks and could take anything excpt soda spilled on them, they jammed. One quick cycle in the commercial washers...which last only 15minutes...unjammed them.
What do you have to lose?

Even though others claim success, I would try other methods first. And if you have a laptop, it obviously can't go in the dishwasher.
But you know some dingbats will do just that! I thought I noticed fewer posts on DU for a few days after that tip was published.... ;-)

"Doe some reason this reminds me of a story a friend once told me about his dad.
His dad had an encounter with some poison ivy, with the usual results. Some of his fraternity brothers convinced him that it was possible to become completely immune to poison ivy by picking a few leaves, putting them between two slices of white bread, and eating them.
He was in the hospital for a long time... "
One of my uncles was out hunting in the woods and needed to use the bathroom. After finishing, he grabbed a handful of nearby leaves to wipe up. Yep, you guessed it!
He had to be carried out of the woods on a homemade stretcher.
This still comes up at every family reunion.

Buy a black keyboard, they hardly ever look dirty.

I still think buying a new keyboard would be more cost effective.

SOMETIMES putting a blown hard drive in the freezer for an hour will let you boot it up long enough to get the data.Sometimes tapping the drive (lightly) with a hammer will allow it to spin up as well. That particular 'hack' saved my rear one time during a huge upgrade on a bunch of IBM servers that had been running continuously for 4 years.

I realize it's getting late and these old eyes aren't as good a judge of age as they used to be. That said, I believe a man could be thrown in jail in most states just for looking at the racks on some of those dishwashers.

Given what they cost today, you are right. This is a hangover from the days when they were expensive. I manage a T&QC Lab. Even though its a Fortune 500 company, equipment takes time. People are testing and on deadlines, so anything that works quickly is a good thing. At home, I'd just go buy a new keyboard :-)
