A Seaside man narrowly escaped with his life after being pistol-whipped in a gang-related dispute Friday morning, according to the Seaside Police Department.

Police went to the 1300 block of Noche Buena Street around 11:15 a.m. A 19-year-old man told police that Hector Ramos, also 19, whom the victim was vaguely acquainted with, had struck him across the face with a pistol. Police said the victim suffered a broken nose.

The man said that after Ramos pistol-whipped him, he loaded a chamber of the pistol, and then pointed the firearm at him.

But when Ramos pulled the trigger, according to police, the gun didn't fire and the victim took the opportunity to run from the assailant.

Officers located a man in the area who fit the description and the victim was able to identify Ramos on the scene. Police found a loaded .80-caliber semi-automatic pistol that matched the description provided by the victim earlier, and made an arrest without incident.

Ramos, an alleged member of the Norteno street gang, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, participation in a criminal street gang, possession of a loaded firearm and violation of probation. He was booked in to Seaside police jail without bail.

Hand Mortar.

I would not want to be the man expected to fire that baby.

I think the Japanese had a similar weapon in WW II

I think they called it the Knee Mortar. It was meant to be wrested on the ground and aimed by hand.

I would guess that the mortar in your picture would be fired in similar fashion.

I'm not so sure. If you look closely, you'll see this "hand cannon" has both a trigger and trigger-guard. It looks to me as though it was intended to be fired like a pistol.

Whether anyone was actually crazy enough to do that... ;)

I used to email corrections to idiots like this. Even when you include links, etc. to document your corrections, they ignore it.

I find it much more enjoyable to post articles such as this to FR, where members can shine a spotlight on the authors' ignorance and stupidity.

Doesn't sound to me like he narrowly escaped an assault...it sounds to me like he narrowly escaped getting shot.

Actually, first I thought of a pepperbox, but then I thought ALL revolvers have more than one chamber, and the gun was an automatic. Then I thought of a gattling gun, but then I thought that's not a pistol.

Anyway, I'm just sitting here having happy thought...

Don'tcha know - ALL assaults are caused by people getting shot.

Once we get rid of guns - the crime rate will go to zero.

Seaside and Sand City are pretty bad. I live in Prunedale, no gangs yet, just the occasional meth lab.
