SUV Slams Into Horse-Drawn Buggy, Injures Amish Girl, Grandmother

POSTED: 4:37 pm EST February 15, 2006 UPDATED: 4:49 pm EST February 15, 2006

An Amish grandmother and her granddaughter were seriously injured Wednesday when their horse-drawn buggy was struck by a sport utility vehicle in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Police said the driver of a 2000 Ford Explorer slammed into the back of the buggy on Thompson Corner Road in Mechanicsville.

Authorities said the driver of the buggy, identified as Mary Z. Hostetler, 60, of Charlotte Hall, was driving her 12-year-old granddaughter at the time of the crash. She was apparently taking her granddaughter to school.

Both were transported to Washington Hospital Center with serious injuries.

Authorities said the accident remains under investigation and no charges had been filed in the case.

Police identified the driver of the SUV as Timothy Michael Donais, 32, of Mechanicsville.

The injured horse was taken to a nearby farm for care.

This is a sad story. Though aside from the point of this story, I must say that I have great respect for the Amish. They live the way they choose to, and don't bother anybody. IMHO, it is ridiculous how in many cases they are essestially being forced off their land. I know there are alot of pro-business and development guys here who might take issue with that statement, but I stand by it.

Do the Amish believe in lawsuits?
