Somebody please tell me what would cause someone to do this. I've been trying to get more info on this, but as you can imagine, my friend is beyond upset.
I get riled up, from time to time, but I cannot imagine this brand of violence.
There is no explanation that could make this any easier for you or for Sara's family. I know this is breaking your heart to see your friend in so much pain, and I am sorry for that. All we can do is offer up our prayers that God's hand will be upon everyone who mourns over this tragedy.

My guess is meth, PCP, crank, some sort of speed-type drug.
Speed makes people inhuman.

I do not know when statistics began to be collected on this, but back when Chandra Levy went missing (and then Laci Peterson) I came across an on-line (ABC News) article about the phenomenon of pregnant women being murdered.
In many, many cases of abortion, it is the father of the child that insists on and pays for that to take place. He will threaten the mother with abandonment.
It seems that failing to convince the mother to abort her child the male will take what for him is the next 'logical' step: if the mother won't "take care of the problem" for him, he will "take care of the mother."

It is rationally impossible to cheapen the life of one class of persons without cheapening the life of all. Women and children have always been the weakest and most vulnerable. God's heart has always been with the widow and the orphan for this reason: these need Him most!
