Help needed on new project

Posted on 11/18/2005 7:04:45 AM PST by BirchRunBuckeye

I hope I am posting this in the right space...if not, please forgive me, as I am new here.

I have a new idea for a project, a website really, and am looking for help and contributors. Briefly, here is the what I have in mind: I want to start a project that chronicles small town america. I want it to be strictly NON-political...afterall, there are great smalltowns that are both left and right.

The idea is to present small town life across america...this would include a brief history, some pictures, events, etc. The towns profiled would be something like 50,000 people or less.

I grew up in a small town in Ohio, and even though I moved away when i joined the Navy, I still feel more comfortable in a small town. After years of living in big cities, I recently had the chance to move back to a small town in Michigan. I believe that there are certain values that small towns share that are in danger of being lost, and I would like to document some of this before it is gone. I believe that small towns have a great sense of community, where neighbors know each other, don't seal themselves in steril bubbles. We still have memorial day and 4th of july parades. In the fall, the whole town goes to see high school football games. This is the life I love, and the life I want to preserve.

So, what am I looking for? Well, a couple things...first, I am looking for a few people to help me hash out the structure and direction, as well as the content. These people should be experienced in putting together websites...should know their way around the software that makes sites run, maybe even know some HTML and some PHP.

I am also looking for people to contribute the story of their town. Pictures, history, interviews, links to local businesses, etc. If the town has fallen on hard times, what was the driver behind it? Essentially, we would like to know all about your town!

If there are folks out there who are talented writers that would like to help, those would be appreciated. I will not fool myself into thinking I can write. Writers would give the articles about these towns a consistent tone throughout the site. Very important.

Lastly, by way of full disclosure, I want to let you know that I am a moderate democrat. I have voted both democrate and republican in my life, and will continue to do so in the future. I tell you this because above all else, I believe in honesty. If you want to work with me, and you sense I am taking things to the left, you need to keep me honest. It is VERY important to me to present this as an unfiltered look at small town america.

If this interests you, please let me know. I have the domain regestered, and the hosting paid for. Nothing financial will be asked of you, and this is not going to be a vehicle for generating money.

Welcome to town. Where do you propose in this project to help protect Conservatism, such as fighting Michael Newdow and Liberals?

We're very busy people...

I don't intend this project to protect conservatism, nor to fight Micheal Newdow. Nor do I intend it to protect liberalism. If you re-read my post, you will see that I am very straight forward...this is to be NON-political. It is to present small town life through an unfiltered lens.

If you are too busy, I understand, and appreciate the time it took you to read the post.

Thanks. I saw that honest disclosure. There is an elephant in the living room. Actually, a totalitarian in a Donkey suit. And most of us here will prefer not to ignore it as you seem willing to do.

Your project sounds quite decent but remember, this is one of the notorious dens of infamous 'Vast Right Wing Conspiracy' you're dealing with here. We are the people who actually get out and vote and call for prosecution of Hillary Clinton for campaign fraud and ejection of John Kerry from the Senate for treason.

"Important principles may and must be inflexible." -- Abraham Lincoln

Best to you, and please vote for true Conservatives.

I'm from a small town of 1500 people. You're right, there are qualities of small town life that are in jeopardy of extinction.

In a small town, everyone knows everyone and everything....you can't hide, you can't lie, and you can't lay around on your lazy butt and expect people to take care of you (unless you are truly in need, then your not lazy - your needy.) Charity is important and it is "hands on." People get great satisfaction from helping those in need, and great pride in being self-sufficient. Small town folks don't wait for a government program to define their needs or their giving and they want the government to keep its hands out of their pockets.

Conservatism is the bedrock of small town living. I suggest you examine yourself and ask yourself why you would be a lib. Of course small town residents will take money and aid from the government if it's offered...but they seldom approach with a hand out asking to be bailed out!

Thats fair enough. And I appreciate your candor. I will go forth and seek help from other places. When the project is up and running, I will post it here, and I hope that at that point, you will see that I am not a "totalitarian in a Donkey suit".

The funny thing is that if I were to put this same post on, lets say, DU, I would get exactly the same reaction, from the other side.

Best of luck to you all here.
