This is retarded.
If George W. proposed this the Greens would be going bananas
I hope this causes them as much misery as they caused during the Rape of Nan-King or the Bataan Death March
Or perhaps they shall demand "ONE BILLION DOLLARS"

Someone needs to give the Guardian a Geology lesson... 6 miles is NOWHERE CLOSE to the center (or the centre) of the Earth!

Oh definitely! but can you imagine if these fools actually did it, what would happen to all the tectonic plates?
With all that pressure being released thru one opening it could be anyone's guess. It is such a stupid story that I can't help but think that the Guardian is being spoofed.

Many years ago there was a similar project, I forget by whom exactly, called Project Mohole. I have no idea what became of it. The name came from the 'Moho' (short for, I think, Mohorovicic Discontinuity), which is what the boundary between crust and mantle is called.

Oh definitely! but can you imagine if these fools actually did it, what would happen to all the tectonic plates? Nothing would happen. The earth is not a balloon that can be popped; the proof of that is that it and we are still here.

That is so cool. I remember that comic!
Thanks for the pic

Yeah I know but at the very least they may create a new volcano.
I am not a Vulcanologist but might it be possible that pressure being released may have some kind of effect?

I'm not a vulcanologist either, but I know that the energy which goes into forming a volcano is enormous.

So....... You can't say it is not possible.
Tell me what is the effect of drilling a hole into the magma center of the Earth? Please explain it to me.
All this magma under pressure is just going to sit there because the Japanese drilled a hole? If America ws trying this you'd probably be peeing your pantaloons.

Hey Dingdong! I was just starting a lightheared humorous thread. Don't get your split-crotch panties in a twist.
