Actually The Hitchhikers Guide was a VISUAL dead on IMO. That book is almost impossible to turn into a movie everyone would like. The plot is thin to begin with, and the humor is so....written. I actually thought Mos Def and Alan Rickman were the only too castings that were any good. I really don't think it was possible to make a movie that a majority of fans liked. I actually liked it better than I thought I would because it didn't try to Hollywood it too much.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency on the other hand, now THAT could be a really good movie.

Somebody is lie-ing!!

Sith also set the standard for single-day total, with its $50 million opening-day haul beating Shrek 2's previous mark of $44.8 million.

I think this may be a triumph of marketing, I wuold guess that most of today's kids haven't even heard of the 1970's original.

But the new one does have Sandler, Chris Rock, Goldberg, and Nelly so that is probably enough to win the weekend...

Star Wars debuted last weekend, and this is the first weekend for several films.

It's possible that even Madagascar could win the weekend with a strong take Sat/Sun.

What are you talking about? This is for Friday night's box office, not opening day.

Hildy, thanks for the news on Hitchhiker's. Loved the books and have not seen the movie yet. Was worried it was going to not be that good. Sounds like it's a movie for those that haven't read the books

I was SO disappointed with Hitchhikers Guide

Only disappointed? I can't believe what an incredibly bad job they did with Douglas Adams' wonderful Hitchhiker novels.

"We walked out of Hitchhiker's Guide"

Dam. I was looking forward to seeing it. I thought the 6 part series was hysterical. I guess I better read the book. What was wrong with it?

Joe, the Yahoo news was dated 05/23. It's a report of the last weekends box office stats.

The $15.5 million is from last night, 05/27.

Actually Adams did most of the script himself before he died.

and maybe cheaper...Netflix per month charge is about what you would pay to go to an evening (non-matinee) movie with two people and some popcorn and drinks...no wonder the theaters are having a rough go.

Also isn't that a pretty steep drop off for Star Wars ROTS from first to second weekend? I'll have to check BoxOfficeMojo later but I think Spider-Man, for example, did a lot larger SECOND weekend than the 50 mill range. Not sure though.

Were you fans of the books?

Avid Netflix lover as well ... they just stole 5 days off my month though when my credit card expired so think I will go try blockbusters service for awhile. I did use Walmart for a short while (no longer a service provider) and although the price was right the lagtime in the mail was the killer with them.

But have to agree with yuu - movies by mail are great and have enjoyed the foreigh flicks (on occasion) myself. Also good for the HBO shows if you don't get HBO!! Have caught up on 'sizx feet under', weird but addictive drama ... and also got caught up on WB's smallville after missing the first couple of years.

That book is almost impossible to turn into a movie everyone would like.

You must not have seen the British television series. It was side splittingly funny. I believe Adams originally wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide as a radio play for the BBC.

I disagree with them on Hitchhiker's.... I loved it, as did my husband and brother who were with me. I wondered if those that didn't like it actually ~didn't~ know that the story and the books are intended to be quirky.

The opening sequence should completely win you over.
