The great Herman Wouk (pronounced "woke") is 90 today.

He is the renowned author of The Caine Mutiny (and the play, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial), Marjorie Morningstar, Youngblood Hawke, The Winds of War, and War and Rememberance.

He is also an unapologetic religious Jew and the author of This is My God: The Jewish Way of Life.

His works promote traditionalist conservative values.

Mazal tov and v'ed meah v'esrim (he should live to 120) for the only Jewish novelist who did not make a career out of bashing Judaism and Orthodox Jews.

FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.

WARNING: This is a high volume ping list

I used to wonder if he, Arthur Miller and Saul Bellow would all make it to 90. He alone made it. Budd Schulberg is almost there. Sidney Sheldon and Mickey Spillane are still alive so I guess writing pulp makes you live longer.

I liked the first 500 pages of Marjorie Morningstar. It was the second 500 that got alittle tedious.

Michael Medved was talking about Herman Wouk's birthday earlier today. And rightfully praising him too. Happy 90th Mr Wouk and many more!

I've always enjoyed his fiction. His war stories are tremendous.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Wouk.

I have read only The Caine Mutiny and The Lomokome Papers (which I believe is his only science fiction work).

FYI - my mom told that when she was vacationing in the Virgin Islands, years ago, Herman Wouk participated in the Purim service at a local temple. Because Wouk was doing so, my parents went to the service.

Wouk wrote a FABULOUS book called Don't Stop The Carnival, about his experiences in the Virgin Islands. It's a must read. Hilarious.

My only beef with him (so far as I know) is that he promotes Theistic evolutionism in This is My G-d. Oh well. Modernity infects everyone.

Happy birthday to Mr. Wouk!

PS: Is this his birthday on the civil or the Jewish calendar? Interesting if his birthday is La"G Ba`Omer.

"The Winds of War" and "War and Rememberance" are two of the most powerful novels ever written.

I am an avid reader. I read his trilogy "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" approximately 20 years ago and it is still probably the greatest, if not one of the greatest, books I have ever read. Everyone should read these books. While Winds lays the background, the real story comes into play in the two volumes of War and Remembrance. God Bless Mr. Wouk!

i just read your post after I posted mine. "didn't hold up as well as expected" ? What did you expect? Name something you did like. I'm shocked. I'm a bibliophile and a true snob when it comes to books. Just wondering where you are coming from.
