Steve Jobs should forget about all his elbow-rubbing with U2 and John Mayer. Trent Reznor just did one of the coolest things an artist could do, and he did so in a specifically Apple-centric way. He released Nine Inch Nails' new single, The Hand That Feeds, as a 70MB stuffed DMG file containing the entire song in Garageband format with a note from Trent himself. Here's where you can find the download link.

In the included note, Reznor writes, "For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. . . . What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for 'the hand that feeds' in GarageBand format. . . . Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen. Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like."

Amazingly cool. I'm going to get started turning Trent into a woman! You should do the same; however, mind the words of Trent: "There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are."

Also, it seems to run on Garageband 1, despite Reznor's warning otherwise.

Windows users? Don't bother... Garageband only works on OSX Macs.

Interested in remixing a Nine Inch Nails song yourself? You can, legally. All you need is an Apple Mac running GarageBand 2 and a file you can download courtesy of Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor -- he's released a version of the song "The Hand That Feeds" in GarageBand 2 format.

"For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results," Reznor explained in a Read Me file included with the GarageBand project.

Reznor explained that the project was originally created in Digidesign Pro Tools. Rezonor imported and converted the tracks into Apple Loop format to make it suitable for GarageBand.

"I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems. Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen. Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like," said Reznor.

I love his music and sound, but it's hard to listen to, "Closer." with kids around. =8-o

I am. I've been listening since the Pretty Hate Machine days, and have them all since then.

Back to the Apple angle, I wasn't too impressed with GarageBand. I know the free Apple apps are adequate, but can proprietary software given out free be good enough to make professional-level music? That's the realm of some quite expensive software. I might have to reasses that thinking with Trent Reznor using it.

I've heard Garageband is a great program, even has a feature or two that Logic doesn't.
