Dire Straits legend Knopfler says accident shaped his music

Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler said Friday that a motorcycle accident two years ago had shaped his music and made him cherish the present.

Knopfler broke his collarbone and six ribs in a near-fatal accident in 2003 when his motorbike collided with a car in central London. His 2004 hit "Shangri-La" has references to the accident.

"Everybody has their own ideas of Shangri-La ... I tried to teach myself to enjoy the present, enjoy the now," Knopfler, the songwriter and Dire Straits lead guitarist, told a news conference the night before the first of two concerts in India.

"(Music) helped me get the most out of every situation. You realize that everything changes," he said.

Knopfler will play Saturday in Bombay, India's entertainment capital, and on Monday in the southern Indian city of Bangalore.

He said his trip would not include a visit to the Taj Mahal, but he planned to make up for it.

"I will come back with my family and do it. I am determined to do it," he said.

One of the world's most respected guitarists, Knopfler, 55, has written a series of hit songs, including "Love Over Gold," "Sultans of Swing," "Romeo and Juliet" and "Brothers in Arms." In 1999, Knopfler was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

KRAMER (shouting over the cycle's engine): Hey! You ever been in an accident?

BIKER: About five years ago. I was going down this very road. Same time of day, going about the same speed I'm going now...there was a rock in the road. Couldn't have been more than a pebble. Never really saw it! Lost control of the bike, went flyin' about a hundred feet - came down right on my head. Cracked it wide open! Blood and stuff was just splattered all over the road, there...I broke every bone in my face. Hey, you know, when they found me, my eyes were hanging out of their sockets? Yeah, they pronounced me dead at the scene. I was in a coma for...well, they told me about a year...said I'd be a vegetable for life. Yeah, but I showed 'em. Ever since then I always wear a helmet! Lean!

Yeah, I know, the song is a dig at McDonald's.

But the title seemed appropriate.

I just checked the lyrics. Some Englishman wrote a rock song about drawing the Mason-Dixon line?

If you believe this, I can only assume that you've never heard Telegraph Road, Fade to Balck, or On Every Street.
