Hockey Fan Curses Lockout from Beyond the Grave

TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian man has cursed the heads of the National Hockey League -- from beyond the grave.
Archie Bennitz, 84, an ardent hockey fan from Kanata, Ontario, near Ottawa, used his own obituary to blast NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL Players' Association executive Bob Goodenow, for the lockout which has left fans without hockey this year.
The obituary, published in the Ottawa Citizen, was written by Bennitz's 45-year-old son David, who took dictation at his hospital bedside.
In his obituary, Bennitz called Bettman and Goodenow "skunks for denying him the pleasure of watching NHL on TV this year."
He also asked Bettman to step aside and give retired NHL superstar Wayne Gretzky the top job running the league.
"Of all the different words and profanity to choose from, the word 'skunk' sort of summed up what was going on," David told Reuters on Friday. "A skunk won't kill you, but it sure does smell."
David plans to send the published obituary to Bettman and Goodenow, who have been at loggerheads for months over a new NHL labor contract

Hockey must be one of those games that's more fun to play than to watch. It's like soccer on ice to me. Never played it, though.
Hopefully, Archie is watching a much better match now. Maybe he is even playing, in an arena where he can skate and never grow weary.
You are right. I played the game, and I can assure you, it is the greatest game on earth to play. I also enjoy watching it in high definition. To play the game, you must first master a new mode of transportation, skating. If a person does not start skating at a young age, they will never truly master it. I started skating at 4 years of age.
I like hockey and used to go to Stars games when I lived in Dallas. The comparison to soccer is kind of offensive. When did you ever see a bunch of soccer players in the corner beating the daylights of each other with sticks?
I attended a Phoenix Coyotes game a few years ago, and they happend to be playing the Red Wings at that time. Even the camraderie between opposing fans was something to remember.
My brother and I were cheering for the Coyotes right in the middle of screaming Red Wing fans. LOL
But for pure violence, we have the NFL and NASCAR. I just suspect that most diehard hockey fans played the game at same point in their lives. I could be wrong.
I never played but if you've been to the arena, you can become a fan. Hockey is best in person.
The best televised game is football.
College basketball isn't bad on TV but it's a trip in the field house.
I enjoy baseball on the radio.
I also enjoy the NBA on the radio -- if it is mimed.
I love those Dallas star 3rd jerseys. For some reason they took alot of heat from people, but my husband and I love them.
They're not bad.
I miss Dallas sometimes. One of the networks was doing their evening news from Big D a week or two. I saw the skyline and nearly cried.
I'll follow the American hockey team in the Olympics, especially in the medal rounds, and I'll never forget the victory over the Soviets. I may have even cut class that day to watch that game.
I agree, especially about NFL football. There's a certain excitement to being at the stadium, but watching it on TV is the best way to actually see the game.
I do hope they get this lockout resolved, because diehard hockey fans want their game. And I don't blame them.

When so many teams are in the red you have to conclude it is the PLAYERS who are greedy.

Trust me on this one. DO NOT get addicted to watching Hockey. You won't be able to stop, and pretty soon your friends will be commenting on your drooling problem.
What's not to like? Speed, strength, hand-eye coordination, stamina. It's actually pretty hard to believe that something this great came from Canada. It must have been invented up there before Quebec became a socialist province.

I started watching it at around that age, but didn't really start skating till 2002. I doubt I will ever truly master it.
But dang it is sure is fun to play the game anyway! There is nothing like speeding down the ice for a loose puck, getting there right before the defender (who is going full speed the other way), and colliding in the open ice--hearing the "Ohhhhhs" from both benches and being told the defender was horizontal about 3 feet above the ice. And when you both shake your heads a little (to get the cobwebs out), get up and chase after the puck all over again, then shake hands with no malice at the end of the game.
Well, it just isn't a feeling I've gotten playing soccer, football, or baseball.
And that was just last weekend! Can't wait till Sunday for the next installment of the greatest game on earth...
