Aaron Carter Drives Over Mattress, Escapes SUV Moments Before Flames Erupt

01.07.2005 9:51 AM EST

Singer and his passenger treated for minor bumps and bruises.

Aaron Carter emerged unscathed from an accident late Wednesday night when he hit a mattress with his SUV, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.

The singer, 17, was driving his 2004 Cadillac Escalade on Florida's Turnpike, north toward

Orlando, at around 12:30 a.m. when a mattress fell from the cargo bed of a delivery truck ahead of him, according to his spokesperson.

Carter drove over the mattress, which became lodged under the SUV and caught fire. He then pulled over and he and a passenger escaped to the side of the road where they watched as the vehicle exploded moments later.

Carter, who was heading to Orlando to shoot the cover photo for his upcoming album, Saturday Night, said in a statement, "Everything happened in such a whirlwind. It was like the mattress flew out of nowhere. You think you're invincible when you're behind the steering wheel of an SUV but you're not. I'm OK but you can imagine I'm still in shock."

Both Carter and his passenger were treated at the scene of the accident for minor bumps and bruises. Carter rejected hospital care, choosing instead to spend the night at a friend's house recuperating.

I had a big ol section of 4x4 rattle off a truck in front of me while I was on my bike on the freeway at 70mph. It just flew off!

I didn't want to swerve or brake hard, 'cuz I figured that would just make my problems worse....

I ducked my chin down to the tank and braced for impact with it. It hit my helmet and shoulder with a soft *thunk*

It was a piece of styrofoam.....

I, too, was perplexed by that. Between the celebrity and the journalist, there may have been a bit of hyperbole being used [insert Captain Hyperbole graphic here]

More than likely the matress was caught by a piece of metal under the SUV and it laid against the catalytic converter and caught fire. The catalytic converters in new cars get really hot, Never park a new car in a newly cut field or a pile of leaves. Not too long ago we had a fund raiser here and the people, putting it on cut weeds in a field so people could park there. You got it the catalytic converter caught the cut grass on fire and burned 4 cars before it was put out.

I've seen pickup trucks loaded up with wood or other materials... and little more than a single cord holding it all down.

They had a cord? That's pretty darned uptown from what I've seen on Texas and Oklahoma highways. Some of these numbnuts think the downdraft created in the back of the pickup will hold wood, seat cushions, chairs and the like down. Oh, and why bother putting up the tailgate while hauling some of this stuff. (that is, when the tailgate can be put up)

True, but matresses are supposed to be fire retardant...

It happened too fast to be scared. I did have a little 'shakes' afterwards, though. I gulp of scotch fixed that when I got home.

There is a lot of road debris in NM. I once spotted a chest-of-drawers sitting upright and unharmed in my lane on I-25 once. Thank God it was under a streetlight. As I rode past it in the right lane, I noticed a pair of pink panties hanging out of the top drawer.....

"Furniture on the highway is very common in Florida..."

I'm assuming it just falls off of cars and trucks while people are moving, and they don't risk their necks to retrieve it, though don't give a fig about the accident they're leaving in their wake. :(

But, how does one shoe end up there? Or a (Ewwww!) pair of undies? Are people throwing crime evidence out the windows, or what? I mean, MOST of us know where our underwear is at all times, LOL!

I had no idea who this kid was until today. And really... a 17 year old driving a Cadillac Escalade? Those things are HUGE. I doubt he could even see over the dash! Accident waiting to happen either way, IMHO.

The first written report of grass fire from a catalytic converter I read about happened in the margins of the parking lot at Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine way back in the beginning of the smog wars.

As far as I know he's an okay kid, pretty popular with the younger girls who like country music (have one of those here, can't figure it out) a couple of years back, don't know about now. Had no idea he was 17 already -- so maybe that picture could be a couple of years old.

Nope, unlike the incident in the article, it gets placed there. There are members of the S Florida community who like to use the highways as one giant swap shop.

That's not to say there isn't also a very big problem with improperly secured loads falling off of trucks and cars. There's usually at least one notorious impaling incident every year.

Sounds like the SUV tried to make it look like an accident.
